James Steele (British Army Officer)
General Sir James Stuart Steele (26 October 1894 – 24 July 1975) was a senior British Army officer who served as Adjutant-General to the Forces. Early life and military career Born in Ballycarry, County Antrim and educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and at Queen's University Belfast, Steele was gazetted as a temporary second lieutenant in the Royal Irish Rifles, on 26 September 1914 during the First World War and posted to the 7th (Service) Battalion. He served on the Western Front from 1915 to 1917. He served at the battles of Messines, Somme and at Passchendaele. He was given a regular commission in June 1916. He was mentioned in despatches in April 1917 and was awarded the MC in August 1917. Steele served the rest of the war in India and was mentioned in despatches again. James Steele (United States Army Officer)
James Steele is a consultant and retired United States Army officer whose military career and work as a military contractor from Vietnam to the War in Iraq drew controversy for allegations of abuse and war crimes. Steele's military career began during the Cold War, assigned to postings in Central and South America. He was involved in the "dirty wars", training counter-insurgency commandos who later carried out violations of human rights. He later served in the Vietnam war. From 1984 to 1986, during the Salvadoran Civil War, Steele operated as a counterinsurgency specialist and was a member of a group of United States special forces advisers to the Salvadoran Army. In 1986 he was implicated in the Iran contra affair. James Harlan Steele
James Harlan Steele (1913–2013) was an American veterinarian recognized as “the father of veterinary public health” who led some of the first efforts to prevent the spread of disease from animals to humans. Steele's professional career spanned more than 70 years. It began in 1938 when he worked in a brucellosis testing laboratory for the Michigan State Department of Agriculture while studying veterinary medicine at Michigan State University. Brucellosis developed in many of his veterinary colleagues, and he wanted to learn how the causative pathogen and other pathogens were transmitted from animals to humans. This marked the beginning of his lifelong vocation of studying and controlling zoonotic diseases. In 1941, Steele received a doctorate of veterinary medicine from Michigan State University, and in 1942, he earned a master of public health degree from Harvard University. James Steele (born 11 March 1950) is a Scottish former football centre back who played professionally in Scotland, England and the United States. He helped Southampton win the 1976 FA Cup Final. Playing career Early career Steele was born in Edinburgh; after leaving school, he was a trainee mechanical engineer with the National Coal Board. As a 15-year-old he was playing for a village team in his native Scotland when Tynecastle Boys Club, who were affiliated to Scottish First Division team, Hearts, spotted his talent and signed him up as an apprentice. James Henry Steele, Jr. (December 11, 1909 – September 15, 1980), nicknamed Jimmy Steele, was an American college football player and coach for the Florida Gators football team of the University of Florida. Early years A native of Tampa, Florida, he attended Hillsborough High School in Tampa, and played for coach Nash Higgins' Hillsborough Terriers high school football team. University of Florida After high school, Steele enrolled in the University of Florida in 1927, where he played for coach Charlie Bachman's Florida Gators football team from 1928 to 1930. He played at the tackle and guard positions for the great Gators of 1928, which finished with a win–loss record of 8–1, losing only their last game by a single point to the Tennessee Volunteers, 13–12. James George Steele (28 June 1962 – 16 November 2017) was a British dentist. He authored the Steele Review in 2009 which proposed reforms to the dental services provided by the National Health Service. Early life and education Born in Fairmilehead, Edinburgh to George and Christelle Steele, Jimmy Steele attended Royal High School before studying dentistry at the University of Dundee. He had an older sister, Alison. Career Upon graduation in 1985, Steele began his career at the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School and the Perth Royal Infirmary. In 1989, he joined the faculty of Newcastle University, teaching in the School of Dental Sciences. In 2006, the Tony Blair government modified the NHS dentistry system, so that dentists were paid a rate based on a selection of pre-approved treatments. Jimmy Steele (8 August 1907 – 9 August 1970) was born in Belfast, Ireland and was one of the most prominent Irish Republican Army (IRA) men in Belfast after the Irish Civil War. Steele was an Irish republican who spent most of his life in jail as a result of his activities with the IRA. Steele joined Fianna Éireann in 1920 during the Irish War of Independence and later went on to join the IRA. He was arrested in 1923 and again in 1924 and imprisoned in Crumlin Road Gaol. After his release in 1925, Steele helped in the re-organisation of the IRA's Belfast Brigade. In 1935 Steele led an IRA raid on a RUC base within the grounds of Campbell College, a school in the east of the city. The raid was unsuccessful due to a tip-off, and Steele managed to escape. The following year he was arrested for the raid along with several other IRA members and again sent to Crumlin Road Gaol on a five year sentence.
