James Scully (GC)
James Patrick Scully, GC (20 October 1909 – 28 December 1974) was an Irishman who served in the Royal Pioneer Corps of the British Army during World War II and was awarded the George Cross, the United Kingdom's highest award for civilian gallantry and for military gallantry outside combat. He is the only member of the Corps to have won that distinction. Early life He was born in Crumlin, Dublin, Crumlin, a suburb of Dublin, to Thomas and Bridget Scully (). He had two brothers and five sisters. After a basic education in Dublin, he moved to London in 1925 at the age of 16 to seek work, and gained employment as a labourer. Pioneer Corps In January 1941, he volunteered for the British Army, and was assigned to 256 Company, Royal Pioneer Corps, which was deployed to Birkenhead, Merseyside. James Scully (poet)
James Scully (born 1937, New Haven, Connecticut) is an American poet. Died 12/11/20. Biography Scully attended Roman Catholic grammar and high schools. He was a beneficiary of the post–World War II economic expansion, including tuition-free access to a local teachers college. In 1964, supported by a National Defense Fellowship, he received a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. Recently he published a journal of impressions, incorporating historical information following a visit to the former Yugoslavia. This was published originally in Serbian translation. Azul Editions published the English language text: ''Vagabond Flags: Serbia & Kosovo'' (2009). ''Angel in Flames: Selected Poems & Translations 1967-2011'' is the most recent of eleven books of poems. Skull the Slayer (James Patrick Scully) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character debuted in his own book in August 1975. Publication history Skull the Slayer had his own ongoing series starting in August 1975, which ran for eight issues. He appeared later in ''Quasar'', ''Fantastic Four'', ''X-Men'', and ''Squadron Supreme'' series. Fictional character biography Skull the Slayer is a trained soldier turned superhero who wears a Scorpion power belt that enhances his strength and durability. Jim Scully (public Servant)
James Scully is a retired senior Australian public servant. He is best known for his time in the Australian Government trade department. Life and career Scully was the son of William Scully, a federal Labor MP and government minister. He studied English and History at the University of Sydney, going on to join the Australian Public Service in 1949, in the Department of Trade and Customs as a junior clerk. Between 1961 and 1963, Scully was Assistant Trade Commissioner in Cairo. In 1967, Scully was appointed a First Assistant Secretary in the Department of Trade and Industry, heading the trade services section. In August 1975, Scully was appointed to his first Secretary role, heading the Department of Minerals and Energy. He went on to fill the Secretary position at the Department of National Resources (1975–1977), the Department of Trade and Resources (1977–1983) and the Department of Trade (1983–1984).
