James Scott (composer)
James Sylvester Scott (February 12, 1885 – August 30, 1938) was an American ragtime composer and pianist. Life and career He was born in Neosho, Missouri to James Scott, Sr. and Molly Thomas Scott, both former slaves. In 1901 his family moved to Carthage, Missouri, where he attended Lincoln High School. In 1902 he began working at the music store of Charles L. Dumars, first washing windows, then demonstrating music at the piano as a song plugger, including his own pieces. Demand for his music convinced Dumars to print the first of Scott's published compositions, "A Summer Breeze - March and Two Step", in 1903. Sir James Sibbald David Scott, 3rd Baronet (1814–1885) of Dunninald Castle, Forfarshire, was a Scottish antiquarian and army officer. Life Born on 14 June 1814, he was eldest son of Sir David Scott, 2nd Baronet of Egham; his mother was Caroline, daughter of Benjamin Grindall. He graduated B.A. in 1835 from Christ Church, Oxford, and was a captain in the Royal Sussex Light Infantry Militia and its offshoot, the Royal Sussex Militia Artillery, from 21 April 1846 to 22 January 1856. He succeeded to the baronetcy in 1851, and was J.P. and D.L. for Sussex and Middlesex. Jim Scott (Virginia Politician)
James Martin Scott (June 11, 1938 – April 13, 2017) was an American politician and community affairs consultant. A Democrat, he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in November 1991 by a margin of a single vote, and served eleven terms, declining to seek re-election in 2013. He represented the city of Falls Church and part of Fairfax County, including Merrifield; since at least 2002, the district was numbered the 53rd. James George Scott
Sir James George Scott (pseudonym Shway Yoe, 25 December 1851 – 4 April 1935) was a Scottish journalist and colonial administrator who helped establish British colonial rule in Burma, and in addition introduced football to Burma. Life He was born in Dairsie, the second son of Mary Forsyth and Rev. George Scott, a Presbyterian minister. His elder brother was Robert Forsyth Scott, who was to become Master of St John's College, Cambridge. Three years after the death of Rev. Scott, Mary moved with her two sons to Stuttgart, where they lived until the outbreak of the Austro-Prussian War. After returning to the United Kingdom, Scott was educated at King's College School. He went on to Lincoln College, but was unable to complete his studies there due to a decline in the family fortune. He worked first as a journalist. James Reid Scott
James Reid Scott (1 April 1839 – 25 August 1877) was an explorer and colonial Tasmanian politician, member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly and later the Tasmanian Legislative Council, he was also Colonial Secretary of Tasmania. Scott was the elder son of Thomas Scott, a former Assistant Surveyor-General of Tasmania, and his wife Ann, ''née'' Reid. Scott was born in Earlston, Berwickshire, Scotland or Gattonside, Melrose. Scott was educated as a surveyor, but never practised his profession. Scott made many exploring expeditions in the western and north-east districts of Tasmania, and did valuable work in mapping the Western Highlands of the colony. Accounts of some of his explorations appear in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Tasmania for the years 1872 and 1875. Wheeling Convention
The 1861 Wheeling Convention was an assembly of Virginia Southern Unionist delegates from the northwestern counties of Virginia, aimed at repealing the Ordinance of Secession, which had been approved by referendum, subject to a vote. The first of its two meetings was held before the vote, and some were keen to preempt ratification. But most preferred to elect delegates for a second meeting, should the vote go against them. When it did, the assembly formed its own Restored Government of Virginia, recognized by the Federal government, and empowered to authorize the creation of a new state of West Virginia. James Scott (American Politician)
James Curtin was an American politician from Arizona. He served a single term in the Arizona State Senate during the 5th Arizona State Legislature, holding the seat from Navajo County. He was one of the largest sheep ranchers in Arizona, at one point serving on the state's Sheep Sanitary Board. He was elected as one of the two delegates from Navajo County to the Arizona Constitutional Convention in 1910. At other points he was the sheriff of Apache County and the treasurer of Navajo County. Biography Scott was born in Eugene, Oregon in 1859, and moved to Arizona in 1880. By 1885 he and his brother, Robert Scott, were living near Show Low, Arizona, where they had a large sheep ranch. Robert was also in the Arizona Legislature, the 24th Arizona Territorial Legislature, serving in the upper house as a senator from Navajo County.
