James Sanderson (musician)
James Sanderson (or ''Saunderson'' 1769–c.1841) was an English musician, now remembered as a composer. The tune for "Hail to the Chief", the presidential anthem of the United States, is attributed to him, taken from a Scottish Gaelic melody. Life Sanderson was born at Workington in Cumberland. He taught himself the violin, and at age 14 was taken on at the Sunderland Theatre. In 1784 he established himself at South Shields as a teacher, and in 1787 became leader at the Newcastle Theatre. In 1788 Sanderson went to London and led the orchestra at Astley's Theatre. He was engaged in 1793 by the Royal Circus as composer and musical director; he remained there many years, producing incidental music for dramas, and vocal and instrumental pieces. Sanderson worked closely with John Cartwright Cross, who usually provided words for a long series of burlettas, melodramas and pantomimes. James Richard "Sandy" Sanderson (December 27, 1925 – August 10, 2010) was a United States Navy vice admiral. He was born in Selma, California, and died in Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Virginia; he had lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia, for a long time. His commands included; commanding officer of , , and Battle Force, United States Sixth Fleet; and Deputy Commander Atlantic Command, Atlantic Fleet. He entered the Navy Aviation V-5 program in 1943 (some say March 1944) and retired from the Navy in April 1983. Vice Admiral Sanderson was awarded the Legion of Merit four times, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Meritorious Service Medal and five Air Medals. Sanderson was an Eagle Scout and recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Sir James Sanderson, 1st Baronet (30 December 1741 – 21 June 1798) was an English banker, a Member of Parliament, an alderman and Lord Mayor of London. He also served as president of Bridewell Hospital (now a school), and was a member of William Wilberforce's Proclamation Society for the ''Discouragement of Vice''. After he died his widow married William Huntington S.S., an eccentric and polemical preacher who regarded himself as a prophet. Huntington used his new riches to build a £10,000 chapel. James Sanderson (military Surgeon)
Surgeon Major James Sanderson (21 May 1812–28 March 1891) was a 19th-century Scottish military surgeon and amateur meteorologist. Life He was born in Dunbar on 21 May 1812. He was educated at Dunbar Grammar School then studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Around 1830 he joined the naval section of the East India Company. He served on the ships "Marquess of Camden" and the "Duke of Argyll" and made journeys to St Helena, Bombay, Calcutta and Ceylon. He also made several journeys to both China and the East Indies. In 1837 he became Assistant Surgeon to the Madras section of the EIC and from there was moved to Ootacamund in the Neilgherry Hills to run a sanitorium there. In the 1840s and 1850s he held the role of Presidency Surgeon in Madras. He served four successive governors: the Marquess of Tweeddale, Sir Henry Pottinger, Lord Harris and Sir William Denison.
