James Sadler (balloonist)
James Sadler (February 1753 – 28 March 1828) was the first English balloonist, as well as a chemist and pastry chef. Life Sadler worked as a pastry chef in the family business, The Lemon Hall Refreshment House, a small shop in Oxford. Sadler was the second person to make a balloon ascent in England, very soon after the Tuscan Vincent Lunardi's flight on 15 September 1784 in the grounds of the Honourable Artillery Company at Moorfields. James Sadler was still the first English Aeronaut, making his ascent the following month, on 4 October 1784 from Christ Church Meadow, Oxford. James Hayes Sadler
Colonel Sir James Hayes Sadler (21 May 1827 – 9 January 1910) was a British diplomat and civil servant. Early life and education Sadler was born to the Reverend James-Hayes Sadler (5 January 1785 – 26 August 1845) and Anne Sadler (née Rich, died 27 September 1847) in Keynsham Bury, Gloucester, England. He was educated at Eton and Oxford. Career In 1854 Sadler was commissioned into the Royal Sussex Militia Artillery, a newly formed part-time home defence unit of the Royal Artillery (RA). (It was retitled the 3rd Brigade, Cinque Ports Division, RA, in 1882 and Sussex Artillery (Eastern Division) RA in 1889, before becoming the Sussex Royal Garrison Artillery (Militia) in 1902.). He was promoted Lieutenant the following year and Captain in 1858. He was promoted to Honorary Major in 1874, and full Major and Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel in 1879. James Hubert Sadler (c. 1830–1865) was an English first-class cricketer. A club cricketer based around Leeds and Bradford, Sadler made a single appearance in first-class cricket for the North in the North v South fixture of 1853 at The Oval. Batting twice in the match, he was dismissed for 3 runs in the North's first-innings by Edmund Hinkly, while in their second-innings he was dismissed for 6 runs by the same bowler. He later emigrated to the United States, where he represented a team made up of English residents. Lieutenant colonel Sir James Hayes Sadler (11 October 1851 – 21 April 1922) was a British colonial administrator and governor of Kenya and the Windward Islands. Early life and education Sadler was born to Colonel Sir James Hayes Sadler and Sophia-Jane Sadler (née Taylor) on 11 October 1851 in London, England. In 1875, he married Rita Annie Smith (1856–1918), and had three sons. Career He rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the British Army, with whom he saw service in India. In 1893 and again from 1893-94, he was Chief political resident of the Persian Gulf (for Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the Trucial States). Jerry Desmonde (born James Robert Sadler; 20 July 1908 – 11 February 1967) was an English actor and presenter. He is perhaps best known for his work as a comedic foil in duos with Norman Wisdom and Sid Field. James Sadler and Sons Ltd was a pottery manufacturer founded in 1882 by James Sadler in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom. History The company specialised in " Brown Betty" teapots. Early versions were terracotta with a transparent glaze, and were shaped by jiggering, jolleying and slipcasting, later they were white earthenware glazed with a Rockingham brown glaze and shaped entirely by slipcasting. They began making novelty shaped teapots in the 1930s, Crinoline ladies, a father Christmas teapot and, in 1938, the iconic racing car teapot, followed by a tank with "Old Bill" as the lid in 1947. The early pre war racing car teapots were usually decorated with silver lustre and are marked "Made In England" with the design registration number 820236 impressed on the base. James Thomas Sadler (c. 1837 — 1906 or 1910), also named Saddler in some sources, was an English merchant sailor who officiated interchangeably as a machinist and stoker. In 1891, the then-53-year-old was accused of killing prostitute Frances Coles. Sadler was placed under arrest, and a mob almost lynched him at the exit of a police station. Eventually, he was dismissed by police for having a solid alibi, and obtained compensation from a newspaper that had branded him as Jack the Ripper. Sadler and the murder of Frances Coles When the body of a 31-year-old woman was located at 5 o'clock in the morning of 13 February 1891, the police undertook an extensive search that concluded with the arrest of the victim's boyfriend.
