James Russell (surgeon)
James Russell FRSE RSA (1754–1836) was a Scottish surgeon who was the first professor of clinical surgery at the University of Edinburgh. He was president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was a co-founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 1805 he published one of the earliest descriptions of direct inguinal hernia. His collection of anatomical specimens was donated to the Surgeon's Hall in Edinburgh and is now known as the James Russell Collection. Early life He was born in Edinburgh. His father, also James Russell (d 1773), was a surgeon who became Deacon (President) of the Incorporation of Surgeons in 1752. James Russell (March 31, 1918 – September 3, 1977) was a Canadian ice hockey player. Early life Russell, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, played junior hockey in Guelph, Ontario. After junior, played hockey in the Maritimes, with the Saint John Beavers, Glace Bay Miners, and North Sydney Victorias. James Samuel Risien Russell (17 September 1863 – 20 March 1939) was a Guyanese-British physician, neurologist, professor of medicine, and professor of medical jurisprudence. Early life Russell was of mixed race, born in Demerara, British Guiana (now Guyana), to Hon. William Russell, a Scottish émigré water engineer and sugar plantation owner, and Hon. Mrs Russell, who was of African descent but about whom little is yet known. He was one of four sons with an older brother John and two younger brothers, William (Junior) and Alexander. His father was one of the richest men in the colony. Russell was sent to Scotland as a teenager to continue his education. James Charles Russell is a New Zealand conservation biologist and professor at the University of Auckland. Russell is most widely known for his research on Norway rats (''Rattus norvegicus'') in New Zealand. One of the rats he studied swam over 400 metres between two Hauraki Gulf islands, breaking the swimming distance record for rats. The intentions of the rat are believed to have been amorous. The rat, known as Razza, was featured in '' Nature (journal), Nature'', and later in a children's book by Witi Ihimaera. Russell gained a PhD on the genetics and invasion ecology of rats, from the University of Auckland. He writes a blog for National Geographic on island conservation.
