James Robertson (photographer)
James Robertson (1813–1888) was an English gem and coin engraver who worked in the Mediterranean region, and who became a pioneering photographer working in the Crimea and possibly India. He is noted for his Orientalist photographs and for being one of the first war photographers. Life and career Robertson was born in Middlesex in 1813. He trained as an engraver under Wyon (probably William Wyon). In 1841, he settled in Constantinople where he worked as an "engraver and die-stamper" at the Imperial Ottoman Mint. During this period, he appears to have become interested in photography. By the 1850s, tourist travel to the Near East created strong demand for photographs as souvenirs. A small group of early photographers, mostly of French origin, made their way to Egypt and Constantinople to capitalise on this demand. James Madison Robertson
James Madison Robertson (also referred to as Robinson) (May 28, 1817 – January 21, 1891) was a career United States Army artillery officer who commanded the First Brigade of U.S. Horse Artillery during the American Civil War. Biography Early life and career Born in New Hampshire, Robertson enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1838. He served for ten years in Batteries F and H, 2nd U.S. Artillery. Ranking as a quartermaster sergeant during the Mexican–American War, Robertson received a field commission on June 28, 1848. He was promoted to first lieutenant in September 1852, and served in Florida during the Third Seminole War. It appears possible that prior to 1854, Robertson used the surname "Robinson" and that sometime in 1854 he changed it to Robertson; while it is unclear, this is documented in Heitman's register of the United States Army, and he was often referred to erroneously as Robinson in contemporary documents. James S. Robertson (born 1873) was a footballer active prior to the First World War. Robertson's earliest known club was Chatham of the Southern League. In 1898 he joined another Kent-based club, New Brompton, where he spent three seasons and made a total of 63 Southern League appearances. In his first eleven games he played as a defender, but he then took over from Archibald Pinnell as goalkeeper for two games before returning to his outfield role. James Robertson (1928–2019) was the long-time and founding National Chairman of the Spartacist League (US), the original national section of the International Communist League. In his later years, Robertson was consultative member of the ICL's international executive committee. Biography Born in 1928, Robertson joined the Communist Party in Richmond, California, in December 1946. He was active in its youth organization the American Youth for Democracy. Sir James Wilson Robertson, (27 October 189923 September 1983) was a British civil servant who served as the last colonial governor-general of Nigeria from 1955 to 1960. Early life and education He was educated at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh and Balliol College, Oxford. James Wilson Robertson (2 November 1857 – 19 March 1930) was a Canadian educator and cheese producer. He emigrated from Scotland to Canada at the age of 18, and was later appointed Canada's first Commissioner of Agriculture and Dairying. He was also a professor at the Ontario Agricultural College in the field of dairy. Early life and education Robertson was born on 2 November 1857 in Dunlop, East Ayrshire, Scotland. He was the fourth of ten children of John and Mary Robertson (née Wilson). Robertson received no additional schooling after he was fourteen. After leaving school, Robertson became a leatherworking apprentice in Glasgow. Early career Robertson moved to Canada in 1875, and eventually became a supervisor of cheese factories in Ontario.
