James Reid Rust
James Reid Rust (1872–1945) was a businessman who served as both Lord Provost of Aberdeen and Lord Lieutenant of the City of Aberdeen. Life He was born on 28 April 1872 the son of George Rust (1835-1891) and his wife Margaret Philip in 1881 he was living in the parish of the Kirk of St Nicholas in central Aberdeen. In 1891 they were living 16 Craigie Street in Aberdeen. He was apprenticed to Charles McDonald, granite merchant and owner of Froghall Granite Works at Gerrard Street and Rust later rose to be Director of that company. Around 1900 he set up his own granite company: "Rust & Alexander" also known as the "Caledonian Granite Works" at Holland Street in Aberdeen. He was then living at 9 Mount street in Aberdeen. Rust & alexander also dealt in sculpted granite, supplying to all of Scotland. Lord Provost Of Aberdeen
The Lord Provost of Aberdeen is the convener of the Aberdeen City local authority in Scotland. They are elected by the city council and serve not only as the chair of that body, but as a figurehead for the entire city. They are equivalent in many ways to the institution of mayor that exists in many other countries. According to Munro in Aberdeen up to the end of the sixteenth century, the provost was elected on the first Monday after Michaelmas. From then until 1833 the election took place on the first Wednesday after Michaelmas, and from then (at least until 1897) elections were held on the Friday after the first Tuesday in November. He gives the example of John Cheyne elected 1593 who would have continued in office until the Michaelmas election of 1594. The dates below, up to 1897 recognise this pattern. Lord Lieutenant
A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Lord-lieutenant is now an honorary titular position usually awarded to a retired notable person in the county. Origins England and Wales Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English counties by King Henry VIII in the 1540s, when the military functions of the sheriffs were handed over to them. Kirk Of St Nicholas
The Kirk of St Nicholas is a historic church located in the city centre of Aberdeen, Scotland. Up until the dissolution of the congregation on 31 December 2020, it was known as the ''"Kirk of St Nicholas Uniting"''. It is also known as ''"The Mither Kirk"'' (mother church) of the city. As of 1 January 2021, the building falls under the care and maintenance of the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland. The church has a dark oak interior. History The earliest mention of a church on the site of the present Kirk can be found in a Papal document of 1151. Given Aberdeen's proximity to the sea, St Nicholas was chosen as the patron saint of Aberdeen, as a miracle attributed to him was the rescue of some sailors in a storm. Springbank Cemetery, Aberdeen
Springbank Cemetery is located on Countesswells Road, Aberdeen. It opened in 1884. The cemetery is operated by the local authority, Aberdeen City Council, is one of seventeen cemeteries in Aberdeen. It is located on Countesswells Road with entrances on both Countesswells Road and Springfield Road where the cemetery lodge is situated. According to Historic Environment Scotland, at the south-west corner of the cemetery there formerly stood Springbank Cottage. Herbert James Gunn
Sir Herbert James Gunn RA RP (30 June 1893– 30 December 1964) was a Scottish landscape and portrait painter. Early life Sir Herbert James Gunn (also known as Sir James Gunn) was born in Glasgow on 30 June 1893, the son of Richard Gunn, a draper, and Thomasina Munro. He studied for several years at the Glasgow School of Art and the Edinburgh College of Art. In 1911, he went to the Académie Julian in Paris where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens. After he left Paris, Gunn travelled to Spain and then spent time in London, where he mostly painted landscapes. At the outbreak of the First World War, Gunn initially joined the Artists Rifles. He subsequently received a commission in the 10th Scottish Rifles and saw active service in France, where he met his friend and future patron, Edward Grindlay.
