Sir James Ramsay
Sir James Ramsay (1589 – 11 March 1638), known as "Black Ramsay", was a Scottish soldier in the Swedish service. Biography Ramsay a native of Scotland, born about 1589, was the eighth of nine children of Robert Ramsay of Wyliecleuch. James was nearly related to John Ramsay, viscount Haddington and earl of Holderness. A brother David is noticed separately. James accompanied James VI to England on his accession to the English throne, and was an attendant in the privy chamber of the king and Prince Henry. Subsequently he sought military service abroad and under Gustavus Adolphus. At the battle of Breitenfeld, Ramsay, as eldest colonel, had the command of three regiments of chosen musketeers forming the vanguard. At the capture of Würzburg in October 1631 he headed a storming party, and was shot in the left arm. James Howie Ramsay (7 August 1898 – 26 January 1969) was a Scottish professional footballer and manager who notably played for Arsenal under Leslie Knighton and Herbert Chapman in the 1920s. Career Arsenal bought Ramsay from Scottish side Kilmarnock in February 1924 for £1775. After making 78 appearances and scoring 11 goals for the club, he returned to Kilmarnock in December 1926. James Hubert Ramsay, 17th Earl of Dalhousie, (born 17 January 1948), styled Lord Ramsay between 1950 and 1999, is a Scottish landowner. He is the current Lord Steward. Biography Dalhousie was born the son of the 16th Earl of Dalhousie by his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Mary Stirling. His mother was a sister of SAS pioneer and World War II hero Sir David Stirling. Dalhousie was educated at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire. In 1999, upon the death of his father, Dalhousie succeeded to the earldom of Dalhousie and became the 17th Earl. In 2009, the Earl was appointed Lord Steward of Her Majesty's Household, following in succession to the 5th Duke of Abercorn. The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), established as the National Gallery of South Australia in 1881, is located in Adelaide. It is the most significant visual arts museum in the Australian state of South Australia. James Ramsay (governor)
Commodore Sir James Maxwell Ramsay, (27 August 1916 – 1 May 1986) was a senior officer in the Royal Australian Navy and the 20th Governor of Queensland, serving from 22 April 1977 until 21 July 1985. Ramsay was one of six surviving children. He attended the Macquarie Street State School and The Hutchins School in Hobart. He proved himself to be quite adept at what he attempted in these schools; he was successful in becoming a cadet captain, excelled in Rugby, and was a high achiever in academic and professional subjects. Appointed a naval cadet on 1 January 1930, he graduated from the Royal Australian Naval College at Flinders Naval Depot in 1933 and was appointed a midshipman on 1 May 1934. He had a distinguished naval career. In 1945 Ramsay attended Royal Naval Staff College, Greenwich, England, and in the same year married Janet Grace Burley. The Honourable John James Garden Ramsay (1827 – 20 January 1890) was an industrialist and politician in colonial South Australia. Ramsay was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and served his apprenticeship as an engineer at the St. Rollox Ironworks in Glasgow, and came to South Australia in 1857, establishing four years later at Mount Barker an agricultural implement and machine manufactory, which represented the starting point of what later grew into the largest business of its kind in the colony. Ramsay represented Mount Barker in the South Australian Legislative Assembly from 5 April 1870 (along with John Cheriton), and on 7 July 1880 was elected to the South Australian Legislative Council, for which he sat until of his death. Ramsay was Commissioner of Public Works in the Henry Ayers Ministry from January to March 1872 and in the two John Cox Bray governments from June 1881 to June 1884. James Ramsay (c.1624–1696), bishop of Dunblane, bishop of Ross, was son of Robert Ramsay (1598?–1651). The latter was successively minister of Dundonald (1625–40), of Blackfriars or College Church, Glasgow (1640–7), and of the High Church (now the cathedral), Glasgow (1647–51); was dean of the faculty of the University of Glasgow 1646 and 1650–1, rector in 1648, and principal from 28 August 1651 until his death in the following September. He is buried in Canongate Churchyard. His grave is officially "lost" but the ornate, illegible stone on the east side of the church, now somewhat spuriously ascribed to Rizzio is probably his. James Graham Ramsay (March 1, 1823 – January 10, 1903) was a North Carolina physician and politician who served in the North Carolina Senate and Confederate States Congress during the American Civil War. Biography Ramsay was born on his parents' (David Ramsay and Margaret Foster (Graham) Ramsay) plantation in the Coddle Creek area of Iredell County, North Carolina. He received an education from local schools and then attended Davidson College, where he graduated in 1841. After teaching for a year and studying privately for medical school, he attended Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia where he graduated with a medical degree in 1848. He opened a medical practice on his estate, Palermo, near the town of Cleveland, North Carolina, where he practiced for 51 years.
