James Ramey (politician)
James Graham Ramey (February 12, 1917 – July 19, 2015) was an American politician in the state of South Dakota who was a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives from 1955 to 1964. Ramey was an alumnus of Dakota Wesleyan University and was a cattle rancher. He was married to Myrtle Olive Alden from 1939 to her death in 2007. He died in 2015. Haakon County is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 1,872. Its county seat is Philip, South Dakota, Philip. History The county was created in 1914 and organized in 1915, and was formed from the original counties of Nowlin and most of Sterling, which had previously been absorbed by Stanley County, South Dakota, Stanley County. It is named for Haakon VII, who became king of Norway in 1905. It is the only county in South Dakota named for a non-American person and is one of only nine counties in South Dakota named for persons who did not live in South Dakota. Phillip, South Dakota
Philip is a town in and the county seat of rural Haakon County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 759 at the 2020 census. History Philip was laid out in 1907 when the Chicago and North Western Railway was extended to that point. It was incorporated in 1908. In 1914, Philip was designated seat of the newly formed Haakon County. The city was named for James "Scotty" Philip; the local high school mascot is the Scotch terrier, or "Scottie", in his honor. Economy Agriculture is the primary industry in Philip. Businesses include two grain elevators, a livestock auction, veterinary clinic, and numerous other businesses providing goods and services related to the farms and ranches surrounding the community. Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) is a private Methodist university in Mitchell, South Dakota. It was founded in 1885 and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The student body averages slightly fewer than 800 students. The campus of the university is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. History In 1883, a small band of Methodist settlers meeting in the Dakota Territory secured a charter to found the college as Dakota University. These pioneers were driven to "build a college of stone while living in houses of sod," and had deep religious convictions about the education and future of their children.
