James Porter (Australian Politician)
James Robert Porter (born 19 February 1950) is an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party of Australia member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1975 to 1990, representing the regional South Australian seat of Barker. Porter was born in Adelaide into a wealthy establishment family, and studied law and economics at the University of Adelaide. He became a barrister and solicitor, as well as managing a large rural property owned by his family in the south-east of the state, where his family had large holdings. He also served as a lieutenant in the army reserve. Porter was elected to the House of Representatives in the Liberal victory at the 1975 federal election. James Madison Porter III (1864–1928) was an American civil engineer notable for his role in designing two unique bridges across the Delaware River and for his development of the civil engineering program at Lafayette College. His grandfather, James Madison Porter, was one of the college's founders. Porter III served on the civil engineering faculty at Lafayette from 1890 to 1917 and was an early advocate for materials testing. Biography James Porter (known as ‘Jim’) was born on 10 April 1855 in Hindmarsh, South Australia. His father, Frederick Charles Porter, a miner and explorer of the Gippsland district, brought the family overland to Victoria in 1859. In late 1863, the family settled near the Fulton's Creek and Donnelly's Creek alluvial goldfields. As a nine-year old, whilst fossicking, Porter discovered a high-yielding quartz-gold reef near his parents’ inn, which was named ‘Boy’s Reef’, after him. James Ezekiel Porter (February 2, 1847 – June 25, 1876) was one of General Custer's eleven officers killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn, also known as Custer's Last Stand, and Porter was among the first verified casualties of the historic battle alerting the world to the demise of Custer's group. James Porter (2 October 1827, Belfast – 2 October 1900, Cambridge) was a British academic in the second half of the 19th century. Porter was born on 2 October 1827 in Belfast, the son of Rev. James Porter, Presbyterian minister, Rector of Drumlee, Castlewellan, County Down. James Porter (January 2, 1935 – February 11, 2005) was a Roman Catholic ex-priest who was convicted of molesting 28 children; he admitted to sexually abusing at least 100 children of both sexes over a period of 30 years, starting in the 1960s. Early life Porter started both training for the priesthood and molesting children at a young age; he abused his earliest known victim in 1953, the summer before he entered seminary. He was ordained in 1959 and became a priest of the diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts. Jimmy Porter (football Manager)
W. James Porter (31 July 1901 – 1967) was a Scottish football player and manager who played as a right-half. Born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, he began his career with nearby Wishaw YMCA before moving to England to join Bury in 1921. He played for Bury for 15 seasons, making 396 league appearances and scoring seven goals (421 appearances, 8 goals in all competitions). In November 1937, he was hired by Manchester United to serve as one of the club's scouting network. By that December, his responsibilities had extended to coaching (the League Managers Association website lists him as the club's manager for most of the Second World War period, but it is generally considered that he was assistant to Walter Crickmer, and there is no mention of him in club records beyond the end of the 1938–39 season).
