James Pollock (American Politician)
James Pollock (September 11, 1810 – April 19, 1890) was the 13th governor of Pennsylvania from 1855 to 1858. Political career James Pollock graduated from the College of New Jersey at Princeton before setting up a law practice in his home community, in Milton, Pennsylvania. District attorney and judicial appointments followed and in 1844 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives where he served three successive terms. As a freshman congressman, Pollock boarded in the same rooming house as another new congressman, Abraham Lincoln (who would later become the 16th President of the United States), and they soon developed a mutual respect and longstanding friendship. Pollock was an early supporter of Samuel Morse and his idea for a telegraph and was instrumental in getting the United States Congress to appropriate a small amount to help build the first line. James Pollock (born 1943, South Dakota) is an American artist living in Pierre, South Dakota. Pollock has been characterized as a painter whose work is a bridge between the Abstract art, abstract and the concrete. His style varies widely, sometimes drawing on the abstract styles reminiscent of artists of the early 20th-century Bauhaus school, characterized by strong lines and bold colors, sometimes resembling ancient cave paintings, and sometimes straightforward renderings of landscapes and objects." Pollock is an active En plein air, plein air painter and member of the South Dakota En plein air, Plein Air Artists movement. Captain Sir James Huey Hamill Pollock, (1893–14 March 1982), also known as Shamus Pollock, was a British colonial administrator and unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Pollock studied at the Royal School, Armagh and the University of Leeds. During the First World War he served as a Lieutenant, Captain, and Major in the 7th Royal Irish Rifles. He then joined the Colonial Service, spending many years in British Palestine, including service as District Officer in Ramallah and District Commissioner for Jerusalem. He retired in 1953 and was immediately elected an Ulster Unionist Party member of the Senate of Northern Ireland The Senate of Northern Ireland was the upper house of the Parliament of Northern Ireland created by the Government of Ireland Act 1920. James Arthur Pollock
James Arthur Pollock, FRS, (17 November 1865 – 24 May 1922) was an Irish-born physicist, active in Australia. Born in Douglas, County Cork, Ireland and educated in England, in 1885 Pollock moved to Australia followed with by his family. In 1886, he was appointed second astronomical assistant to the New South Wales government astronomer, Henry Chamberlain Russell. In 1889 Pollock became professor of physics at the University of Sydney. He studied atmospheric ions and vacuum technology amongst other areas. In World War I, Pollock enlisted in the Engineering Corps and served with Edgeworth David. Pollock designed apparatus for use in tunnelling. This enabled destruction of German fortifications on the Messines and Wytschaete ridges in Belgium. He finished the war with the rank of major. Pollock died in Sydney, he had no children. Captain James Dalgleish Pollock VC (3 June 1890 – 10 May 1958) was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Details Pollock was 25 years old, and a corporal in the 5th Battalion, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place at the Battle of Loos, for which he was awarded the VC.: Further information He was commissioned into the Cameron Highlanders in 1916 and left the Army in 1919 with the rank of Captain.
