James Pierce
James Hubert Pierce (August 8, 1900 – December 11, 1983) was an American actor and the fourth actor to portray Tarzan on film. He appeared in films from 1924 to 1951. Background Pierce was born in Freedom, Indiana. He was an All-American center on the Indiana Hoosiers football team. Following his graduation in 1921, he coached high school football in Arizona, and began acting in his spare time. After he was cast in the 1923 production of ''The Deerslayer'', he remained in California and coached football at Glendale High School (one of his players was John Wayne). Career Portrayal of Tarzan Pierce's life changed when he attended a party given by Edgar Rice Burroughs and his daughter Joan. Burroughs, the creator and author of the Tarzan books, immediately wanted Pierce to star in the next Tarzan movie. Pierce gave up a role in the film ''Wings'' to accept the Tarzan role. James Pieronnet Pierce (c. 1825–1897) was an early California pioneer and entrepreneur. Early life James P. Pierce was born 25 August, 1825 in Friendsville, Pennsylvania where he spent his early life, before moving west as a young adult. In Constantine, Michigan, he embarked on a career in General Merchandising. There he met Amelia Ann Pease, a native of Ann Arbor. The couple married on August 25, 1852, in Jackson, Michigan, when Pierce was twenty-seven and Pease was seventeen. Two years later, in 1854, they came to California, reaching San Francisco, California by way of the Isthmus. James Peirce
James Peirce (1674?–1726) was an English dissenting minister, the catalyst for the Salter's Hall controversy. Early life The son of John Peirce, he was born at Wapping about 1674. His parents, who were in easy circumstances, were members of the congregational church at Stepney, under Matthew Mead. Left an orphan about 1680, he was placed, with a brother and sister, in the charge of Mead as guardian. Mead took him into his own house, and educated him with his son Richard Mead under John Nesbitt and Thomas Singleton; and also at Utrecht (from 1689) and Leyden (from 1692). At Utrecht he formed a lasting friendship with his fellow-student Adrian Reland, the orientalist; and he made friendships among his class-mates at Leyden, then the gathering-place of the upper crust of English dissent.
