James Peacock (anthropologist)
James Lowe Peacock III (born 1937) is an American anthropologist. Peacock studied psychology at Duke University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1959. After completing a doctorate in anthropology at Harvard University in 1965, he began teaching at Princeton University. He joined the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill faculty in 1967. Peacock received a Guggenheim fellowship in 1980, and was named Kenan Professor of Anthropology in 1987. Guggenheim Fellowships are grants that have been awarded annually since by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to those "who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts." Each year, the foundation issues awards in each of two separate competitions: * One open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada. * The other to citizens and permanent residents of Latin America and the Caribbean.
