James Northfield
James Northfield (1887–1973) was an Australian graphic artist active from the 1910s through to the 1960s. He illustrated many commercial and government advertisements which depict Australian scenery, wildlife and daily life and also demonstrate the priorities of the government of the day. Northfield is best known as the designer of a series of posters for the Australian National Travel Association, who commissioned him, alongside Percy Trompf, Walter Jardine, Eileen Mayo, Gert Sellheim and C. Dudley Wood to promote Australian holiday destinations to local and overseas travellers. The Australian National Travel Association (1929–2001) was a semi-government industry organisation which promoted tourism and travel in Australia. Percy Trompf
Percival Albert Trompf (1902–1964), was an Australian commercial artist, best known for his travel posters, books, advertising hoardings and pamphlets promoting the nation's tourist industry and Australian and international corporations and companies. His colour lithography was recognised as distinctive during his career and since, Art Deco in style, and innovative in its use of flat colour. Some of his designs depicted historical events, including the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Captain Cook's landing at Botany Bay, and advanced the iconic value of Australian destinations including the Outback, The Great Barrier Reef, and national identity and activities of sun-worship, surfing and bushwalking, using a visual language of modernity, promotion and consumerism. Walter Jardine
Walter Lacy Jardine (6 May 1884 – 24 February 1970) was an Australian commercial artist, known for his fine draftsmanship. Biography Jardine was born in Macdonaldtown, Sydney, the second son of Alfred Henry Jardine (died before 1913), and his wife Amy Mary Jardine, née Lacy (died 20 April 1936). When quite young he was apprenticed to newspaper artist J. H. Leonard, and later studied at an art school conducted by J. S. Watkins. By age 17 he was a regular contributing artist to ''The Australian Star'' newspaper. In October 1910 '' The Lone Hand'' published his pen and ink drawing, "Tennis girl". Eileen Mayo
Dame Eileen Rosemary Mayo (11 September 1906 – 4 January 1994) was an English artist and designer who worked in England, Australia and New Zealand in almost every available medium – drawings, woodcuts, lithographs on stone and tempera, tapestry and silk screening. In addition to being a printmaker, illustrator, calligrapher and muralist, she designed coins, stamps, tapestry and posters, and wrote and illustrated eight books on natural science. Life in England She was born in Norwich and educated in Yorkshire and the Clifton High School, Bristol. She had a thorough grounding in art, studying at the Slade School in London, the Central School of Arts and Crafts and under Henry Moore at the Chelsea Polytechnic. Gert Sellheim
Gert Sellheim (1901–1970) was a German Australian, German-Australian artist. He won the Sulman Prize for his work in 1939 for his Mural Decoration on wall of Victorian Government Tourist Bureau, Hotel Australia Building, 272 Collins Street, Melbourne. Sellheim was born in Estonia to Germany, German parents and studied architecture at universities in Germany before migrating to Western Australia in 1926. He established an architecture and design practice in Melbourne in 1930, and moved to Sydney in 1947. A significant selection of his work was exhibited in the exhibition ''Aboriginal Art and its Application'' organised by the Australian Museum, Sydney in 1941 and his design for an 'Aboriginal Art' stamp was released in Australia in 1948.
