James Wilkes Noble (March 5, 1922 – March 28, 2016) was an American actor, best known for his portrayal of sweet-natured, dense, naive Governor Eugene X. Gatling on ABC's 1979–1986 sitcom ''Benson''. Life and career Noble was born in Dallas, Texas, the son of Lois Frances (née Wilkes) and Ralph Byrne Noble. He studied acting and engineering at Southern Methodist University before leaving to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. James Noble (1876?-1941) was a missionary and the first Aboriginal clergyman in the Anglican Church of Australia. He was also a significant source of evidence in investigations into what became called the Forrest River Massacre. Biography Early life Noble worked as a stockman during the early 1890s. Reputedly born in North Queensland, he later came to work at a station near Scone, New South Wales. He was baptized at Scone in July 1895. Clerical career In 1896 Noble came to work at Yarrabah Mission near Cairns, Queensland, where he 'became indispensable' to the missionary efforts of superintendent Ernest Gribble. At Yarrabah he married Maggie Frew and they had a son, however both she and the child died shortly afterwards. Noble later married Angelina (c.1879-1964), with whom he had six surviving children. James Noble was the 2016 winner of the Dahl-Nygaard Prize. He was Professor of Computer Science at the Victoria University of Wellington, in Wellington, New Zealand until February 2022. James Noble (December 16, 1785 – February 26, 1831) was the first U.S. Senator from the U.S. state of Indiana. Noble was born near Berryville, Virginia and moved with his parents to Campbell County, Kentucky when he was 10. There he studied law and he became an attorney, after which he moved to Indiana and settled in Brookville around 1808. Once settled in Indiana he became a ferryboat operator, a judge and a member of the state's first constitutional convention, in 1816, as a delegate from Franklin County. He was elected to the first session of the Indiana State House of Representatives in 1816. He was elected as a Crawford faction Democratic Republican (later an anti-Jacksonian Democrat) to the United States Senate in 1816. He was reelected to two more terms and served from December 11, 1816, until his death in 1831. James Noble (1800–1848) was a 19th century Scottish minister, antiquarian, geologist and fossil collector. In relation to his fossil hunting, Hugh Miller called him " a gentleman who, by devoting his leisure hours to geology, has extended the knowledge of this upper formation, and whose name has been attached by Agassiz to its characteristic fossil, now designated as Holoptychus Nobilissimus". Life He was born in New Deer in Aberdeenshire the son of Charles Noble. He was educated locally then studied at Aberdeen University where he graduated MA in 1818. In March 1822 he was licensed to preach as a Church of Scotland minister by the Presbytery of Deer. James Noble Tyner (January 17, 1826 – December 5, 1904) was a lawyer, U.S. Representative and U.S. Postmaster-General from Indiana. Tyner was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1869 serving three terms until 1875. While in the House, Tyner opposed granting railroad subsidies, promoted gradual western industrial expansion, and spoke out against Congressional franking privilege. In 1873, Tyner voted for the '' Salary Grab'' pay raise and bonus that prevented him from getting the fourth-term Republican Congressional nomination. President Ulysses S.
