James Nash (ecotheologian)
James A. Nash (1938–2008) was one of the first Christian ecotheologians. In his book, ''Loving Nature: Ecological Integrity and Christian Responsibility'' Nash objected to the traditional Western religious approach to nature based on dominion and control, attempting to replace this by the view of Man as a member of the community of nature. Nash received a PhD in Social Ethics from Boston University in 1967. He served many for years as a journal editor, and was actively involved in the Society of Christian Ethics until his death. Ecotheologian
Ecotheology is a form of constructive theology that focuses on the interrelationships of religion and nature, particularly in the light of environmental concerns. Ecotheology generally starts from the premise that a relationship exists between human religious/spiritual worldviews and the degradation or restoration and preservation of nature. It explores the interaction between ecological values, such as sustainability, and the human domination of nature. The movement has produced numerous religious-environmental projects around the world. The burgeoning awareness of environmental crisis has led to widespread religious reflection on the human relationship with the earth. Such reflection has strong precedents in most religious traditions in the realms of ethics and cosmology, and can be seen as a subset or corollary to the theology of nature. The Society of Christian Ethics (SCE) is a non-denominational academic society that promote scholarly work in Christian ethics and the relation of Christian ethics to other ethics traditions. Its members are faculty and students at universities, colleges, and theological schools primarily in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Founded as the American Society of Christian Social Ethics in 1959, the society changed its name to the American Society of Christian Ethics in before adopting its current name in 1980. The SCE sponsors an annual meeting in conjunction with the Society of Jewish Ethics and the Society for the Study of Muslim Ethics. United Methodist Church
The United Methodist Church (UMC) is a worldwide mainline Protestant denomination based in the United States, and a major part of Methodism. In the 19th century, its main predecessor, the Methodist Episcopal Church, was a leader in evangelicalism. The present denomination was founded in 1968 in Dallas, Texas, by union of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The UMC traces its roots back to the revival movement of John and Charles Wesley in England, as well as the Great Awakening in the United States.
