James Muirhead
James Henry Muirhead AC KStJ QC (24 April 1925 – 20 July 1999) was an Administrator of the Northern Territory and a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. Pre-Northern Territory Muirhead was born in Adelaide and was educated at St Peter's College and the University of Adelaide. After completing high school he enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Forces for service in the Second World War. From 1943 - 1946 he served as an infantryman and signaller with the 57/60 Battalion in Bougainville and later with the 37/52 Battalion in Rabaul, New Britain. He obtained a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Adelaide and was admitted to the South Australian Bar in 1950. He practised as a barrister and solicitor in the firm of Thomson & Co until 1970 when he was appointed as a Judge of the Local and District Criminal Court of South Australia. Order Of Australia
The Order of Australia is an honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government. Before the establishment of the order, Australian citizens received British honours. The Monarch of Australia is sovereign head of the order, while the Governor-General of Australia is the principal companion/dame/knight (as relevant at the time) and chancellor of the order. New Britain Campaign
The New Britain campaign was a World War II campaign fought between Allied and Imperial Japanese forces. The campaign was initiated by the Allies in late 1943 as part of a major offensive which aimed to neutralise the important Japanese base at Rabaul, the capital of New Britain, and was conducted in two phases between December 1943 and the end of the war in August 1945. Initial fighting on New Britain took place around the western end of the island in December 1943 and January 1944, with US forces landing and securing bases around Arawe and Cape Gloucester. This was followed by a further landing in March 1944 around Talasea, after which little fighting took place between the ground forces on the island. Richard Ward (judge)
Richard Charles Ward QC (28 July 1916 – 24 November 1977), generally known as Dick Ward, was an Australian jurist and politician. Ward was born in Kew and attended Victoria Street School and Melbourne High School before studying law at the University of Melbourne. Around 1938 he became a partner in a Darwin legal practice, and in 1947 won election to the first Northern Territory Legislative Council, although he did not stand for re-election in 1949. He spent some years in Adelaide before returning to the Northern Territory and the Legislative Council in 1956. In 1966 he was preselected to stand for the Labor Party in the federal seat following Jock Nelson's retirement, but he was defeated by Sam Calder of the Country Party. He returned to the Legislative Council, winning the seat of Ludmilla, which he held until 1974. In 1974 Ward was appointed to the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. William Forster (judge)
Sir William Edward Stanley Forster (15 June 1921 – 31 January 1997) was the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory holding that position from 1979 to 1985. Before that he was the first (and only) Chief Judge from 1977 to 1979 and Senior Judge from 1971 to 1977, all positions which were effectively the same. Sir William was born in Sydney, New South Wales on 15 June 1921 and, after moving to Adelaide in 1929, attended St Peter's College, Adelaide. Early legal life Forster graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Adelaide. He was in the Royal Australian Air Force from 1940 to 1946 and was a Magistrate at the Adelaide Police Court from 1959 to 1961. The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) is Australia's national research and knowledge centre on crime and criminal justice. The Institute seeks to promote justice and reduce crime by undertaking and communicating evidence-based research to inform policy and practice. The functions of the AIC include conducting criminological research; communicating the results of research; conducting or arranging conferences and seminars; and publishing material arising out of the AIC's work. Dean Mildren
Dean Mildren, (born 27 February 1943) is a former judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. He was appointed to the court on 27 June 1991, and retired February 2013. He is sworn in as an acting judge of the court, so from time to time still adjudicates on cases in the Northern Territory. Early life and education Mildren was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and attended the Norwood High School and the University of Adelaide. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts and from 1966–68 was an Articled Clerk to James Henry Muirhead who was later to become a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. New Britain
New Britain ( tpi, Niu Briten) is the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago, part of the Islands Region of Papua New Guinea. It is separated from New Guinea by a northwest corner of the Solomon Sea (or with an island hop of Umboi the Dampier and Vitiaz Straits) and from New Ireland by St. George's Channel. The main towns of New Britain are Rabaul/Kokopo and Kimbe. The island is roughly the size of Taiwan. While the island was part of German New Guinea, it was named Neupommern ("New Pomerania"). Rabaul
Rabaul () is a township in the East New Britain province of Papua New Guinea, on the island of New Britain. It lies about 600 kilometres to the east of the island of New Guinea. Rabaul was the provincial capital and most important settlement in the province until it was destroyed in 1994 by falling ash from a volcanic eruption in its harbour. During the eruption, ash was sent thousands of metres into the air, and the subsequent rain of ash caused 80% of the buildings in Rabaul to collapse. Bougainville Campaign (1944-45)
The Bougainville campaign was a series of land and naval battles of the Pacific War, Pacific campaign of World War II between Allied forces and the Empire of Japan, named after the island of Bougainville Island, Bougainville. It was part of Operation Cartwheel, the Allies of World War II, Allied grand strategy in the Pacific Ocean, South Pacific.
