James Mooney (Queensland Politician)
James Mooney (c. 1829–1873) was an alderman in the Brisbane Municipal Council in Queensland, Australia. Private life James Mooney was the son of Patrick Mooney from Tipperary, Ireland and his wife Margaret (née O'Brien).Queensland Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages James Mooney died on 31 August 1873 in Brisbane aged 44 years after a long and painful illness; he was living in Stanley Street, South Brisbane at that time. James Mooney was buried on 1 Sept 1873 in the Brisbane General Cemetery at Paddington. Public life James Mooney was elected as an alderman for the South Ward of the Brisbane Municipal Council in 1865 and again in 1872 and 1873. He served on the Legislative Committee in those years. An alderman is a member of a Municipal government, municipal assembly or council in many Jurisdiction, jurisdictions founded upon English law. The Town of Brisbane was a local government area for Brisbane in Queensland, Australia from 1859 to 1903. History The Municipality of Brisbane was gazetted on 25 May 1859 and proclaimed by the Governor of New South Wales on 7 September 1859. The first local government area in Queensland, Brisbane was the only one incorporated prior to the establishment of Queensland as a separate colony. After the passing of the Municipal Institutions Act 1864 the area could establish a municipal council to administer the district – with powers relating to by-laws, to rating, to borrowings, to the control or regulation of public infrastructure and utilities, and to the provision of public amenities such as gardens and hospitals. County Tipperary ( ga, Contae Thiobraid Árann) is a county in Ireland. It is in the province of Munster and the Southern Region. ''The Queenslander'' was the weekly summary and literary edition of the '' Brisbane Courier'', the leading journal in the colony—and later, federal state—of Queensland since the 1850s. ''The Queenslander'' was launched by the Brisbane Newspaper Company in 1866, and discontinued in 1939. History ''The Queenslander'' was first published on 3 February 1866 in Brisbane by Thomas Blacket Stephens. The last edition was printed on 22 February 1939. South Brisbane Cemetery
South Brisbane Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery at 21 Fairfield Road and Annerley Road, Dutton Park, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, adjacent to the Brisbane River. It was built from 1870 to 1990s. It is also known as Dutton Park Cemetery. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 1 October 2003. The cemetery was established in 1866 and remained in active use until the 1960s, after which its use has been limited by lack of space for new graves. History In 1851, the residents of South Brisbane discovered (apparently to their surprise) that the government of New South Wales (before the separation of Queensland) had set aside around 5 acres of land for a general cemetery for South Brisbane.
