James Mitchell (herald)
James William Mitchell (1836 – 1898) was a Scottish officer of arms. In 1879, Mitchell was appointed Carrick Pursuivant in the Court of the Lord Lyon and between 1879 and 1898 he was Rothesay Herald. He was also Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records between 6 March 1890 and his death. Mitchell was a descendant of Sir John Mitchell, 1st Baronet and in 1895 he was recognised as heir male to the Mitchell baronetcy of West Shore by the Sheriff of Chancery. Carrick Pursuivant
Carrick Pursuivant of Arms is a Scottish pursuivant of arms of the Court of the Lord Lyon. The title is derived from the Earldom of Carrick, one of the titles borne by Robert the Bruce before his succession to the crown. The arms of the Earldom are ''Argent, a chevron Gules'', hence the chevron in the pursuivant's badge. The earliest known reference to the office is from 1364. Court Of The Lord Lyon
The Court of the Lord Lyon (the Lyon Court) is a standing court of law, based in New Register House in Edinburgh, which regulates heraldry in Scotland. The Lyon Court maintains the register of grants of arms, known as the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland, as well as records of genealogies. The Lyon Court is a public body, and the fees for grants of arms are paid to HM Treasury. It is headed by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, who must be legally qualified, as he has criminal jurisdiction in heraldic matters, and the court is fully integrated into the Scottish legal system, including having a dedicated prosecutor, known in Scotland as a procurator fiscal. Its equivalent in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, in terms of awarding arms, is the College of Arms, which is a royal corporation and not a court of law. Rothesay Herald of Arms in Ordinary is a current Scottish herald of arms in Ordinary of the Court of the Lord Lyon. The office was created after 1398 when the dukedom of Rothesay was conferred on David, eldest son of King Robert III, on 28 April 1398. This was the first ducal creation ever granted in Scotland. Lyon Clerk And Keeper Of The Records
Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records is a legal and heraldic office in Scotland. The holder of this office is appointed by the Crown, and like the Lord Lyon King of Arms receives an annual salary. Lyon Clerk's duties include heraldic research, the preparation of papers, lectures and conducting and assisting with the preliminary business of application for a grant or matriculation of armorial bearings. This includes scrutiny of documents supporting the application. As Keeper of the Records the duties include maintaining the records of the Court of the Lord Lyon, overseeing the preparation of documents, allowing inspection of the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland and other records, and issuing certified extracts when required. Until 1867 there was a Lyon Clerk Depute, and in 1986 Elizabeth Ann Roads became the first woman appointed to the office of Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records. Mitchell Baronets
There have been two Baronetcies created for persons with the surname Mitchell, one in the Baronetage of Great Britain and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. The Mitchell Baronetcy, of West Shore in Zetland, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 19 June 1724 for John Mitchell. The title was generally thought to have become extinct or dormant on the death of the third Baronet in 1783. However, in 1895 James William Mitchell was served heir male by the Scottish Sheriff of Chancery and is considered by some sources as the 9th Baronet. He was a descendant of the seventh and youngest son of the first Baronet but never assumed the title and neither did his son Hugh Sykes Mitchell. The present status of the baronetcy is uncertain. Francis James Grant
Sir Francis James Grant (1863–1953) was a Scottish officer of arms who eventually rose to the office of Lord Lyon King of Arms. Grant served in the Court of the Lord Lyon as Carrick Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary beginning on 17 May 1886. This appointment lasted until his promotion to the office of Rothesay Herald of Arms in Ordinary and Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records on 8 September 1898. On 10 May 1929, he was appointed Lord Lyon King of Arms and Secretary of the Order of the Thistle. He was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1935. Grant retired from the office on 30 June 1945. He was the representative of Grant of Corrimony, and was the son of John Grant, Marchmont Herald of Arms in Ordinary from 1884 to 1888. He was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists in 1944.
