James Milne (railway Manager)
Sir James Milne, K.C.V.O., C.S.I. (4 May 1883 – 1 April 1958), was an Irish railway manager in Great Britain. He was General Manager of the Great Western Railway (GWR) from 1929 to 1947, and also deputy chairman of the Railway Executive Committee (REC) from 1938 to 1947. Early life Milne was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1883. He attended Campbell College in Belfast and later moved to Great Britain to study Engineering at the Victoria University of Manchester, graduating in 1904. GWR Milne joined the GWR 1904 as a pupil engineer (training to be a locomotive engineer) in the locomotive department. He later moved to Paddington and gained operational and traffic experience. In 1912 Milne married Nora Rebekah Morse, daughter of Levi Lapper Morse. Government work Milne joined the Ministry of Transport when it was set up in 1919 as Director of Statistics until 1921. Lawrence Arabia is the musical guise of New Zealand artist and composer James Milne. In 2006, Lawrence Arabia released his self-titled debut album and the debut album from his band The Reduction Agents, ''The Dance Reduction Agents''. Both albums were nominated for several bNet awards, New Zealand's public voted alternative radio awards. In 2009 he released his sophomore solo album ''Chant Darling,'' recorded between London and Sweden, which resulted in an APRA Silver Scroll Award for the song "Apple Pie Bed" (with co-writer, The Phoenix Foundation's Lukasz Buda). Cornershop are a British indie rock band best known for their single "Brimful of Asha", originally released in 1997 and, in a remixed version, topping the UK chart in 1998. James S. Milne (born 10 October 1942 in Invercargill, New Zealand) is a New Zealand mathematician working in arithmetic geometry. Life Milne attended the High School in Invercargill in New Zealand until 1959, and then studied at the University of Otago in Dunedin (B.A. 1964) and Harvard University (Masters 1966, Ph.D. 1967 under John Tate). From then to 1969 he was a lecturer at University College London. After that he was at the University of Michigan, as Assistant Professor (1969–1972), Associate Professor (1972–1977), Professor (1977–2000), and Professor Emeritus (since 2000). James Robert Milne Royal Scottish Society of Arts, PRSSA FRSE (c.1880–3 February 1961) was a 20th-century Scottish physicist. He served as President of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts from 1923 to 1925. Life He graduated with a BSc from the University of Edinburgh in 1899. He was an early radio engineer and ran the Edinburgh and District Radio Society from around 1900. In 1904 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were James Gordon MacGregor, Cargill Gilston Knott, William Peddie, and George Chrystal. He lived at 11 Melville Crescent in Edinburgh's West End.Edinburgh Post Office Directory 1911 In 1908 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts. In 1923 he succeeded Richard Stanfield as President of the society. In 1925 he was succeeded in turn by R. S. Pilcher, Robert Stuart Pilcher.
