James Miller Anderson
J. Miller Anderson & Co. Limited was a drapery business in Adelaide, South Australia, generally known as Miller Anderson's, with origins dating back to the city's earliest days. The sign of the company was a golden lamb supported around the middle by a blue riband. History In 1839 Robert Sanders ( – ) and John Whyte ( – 28 June 1871) as Sanders & Whyte founded a drapery shop at 71 Hindley Street, Adelaide (Sanders and Whyte both came to Adelaide on the ''Catherine Jamieson'' in December 1838). The following year Robert Miller started a drapery business Miller & Gale, at 52 Hindley street (on acre 52 opposite Rosina Street). Charles Henry Goode
Sir Charles Henry Goode (, 26 May 1827 – 5 February 1922) was a British Australian merchant, businessman, politician and philanthropist in the early days South Australia. He founded Goode, Durrant and Company in 1882. History He was born at Hinton, near Peterchurch, Herefordshire on 26 May 1827, and was apprenticed at the age of 12 years to a drapery establishment in Hereford, and in 1845 he proceeded to London, where he worked for Goode, Gainsborough and Co. and was, with later fellow-Adelaidean R. William Parkin
William Parkin (24 August 1801 – 31 May 1889) was a businessman politician and philanthropist in the early days of the Colony of South Australia History Parkin was a native of Glastonbury, near Barnstaple, and emigrated to South Australia on the ''Recovery'', arriving in September 1839. He operated a drapery on Hindley Street (later the site of Miller Anderson's) then at 30 Rundle Street, next to the Globe Hotel, with G. W. Chinner (There are parallels with fellow-parliamentarian John Hodgkiss.) Robert Alfred Tarlton
Robert Alfred Tarlton (21 April 1828 – 29 November 1918) was a businessman and politician in the early days of the colony South Australia. History Tarlton was born in Birmingham, England and trained for the Ministry. He married Caroline Walters in 1854 and emigrated to South Australia in 1858. In 1860 he had a draper's shop on Rundle Street and by 1861 was a director of G. & R. Wills & Co. Ltd., a position he held until 1869. He was in 1865 a founder of the Bank of Adelaide, along with Henry Ayers, Fred. C. George Hunt (ca.1845 – 13 May 1911) was a wealthy merchant in South Australia, remembered as the founder of " Tranmere House". History George was born in Ashton, Northamptonshire, and emigrated to South Australia with his parents on the ''Ascendant'' in 1849. In 1858 his father, George Hunt Snr. (1806 – 22 August 1874), took up land (section 1197, Hundred of Onkaparinga) 3 km south-east of Norton Summit, which he subdivided to become the town of Ashton. John Hodgkiss
John Hodgkiss (ca.1820 – 23 June 1897) was a politician in the early days of the Colony of South Australia History Hodgkiss was born in Tenbury, then in Shropshire, and served an apprenticeship as a draper in Worcester. He emigrated to South Australia in 1849 and with John Farmer (died 7 October 1888) opened a drapery "Farmer & Hodgkiss" in Hindley Street (then the premier shopping strip in Adelaide) in what was previously J. S. Crabb's grocery opposite the "Royal Admiral" hotel. Farmer returned to England in 1857 after their shop was destroyed by fire, and Hodgkiss, then sole owner, moved his business (as Hodgkiss & Co.) to 26 and 28 Rundle Street, where it remained until sold to James Marshall & Co. in 1879. Andrew Murray (journalist)
Andrew Murray (1813–1880) was an Australian journalist. Andrew Murray was born in Scotland, and educated at the Andersonian University in Glasgow, winning prizes as an essayist. He emigrated to Adelaide in 1839, and founded a drapery business in Hindley Street (at that time Adelaide's foremost shopping precinct) with George Greig as Murray, Greig, & Co. Murray married Jessie Spence, sister of Catherine Helen Spence, in 1841. In 1841, the business failed, and Murray was able to find employment as a journalist with the ''Southern Australian'', the second newspaper to be established in South Australia.
