James Menzies (New Zealand Politician)
James Alexander Robertson Menzies (21 February 1821 – 18 August 1888) was the first superintendent of the Southland Province in New Zealand from 3 August 1861 to November 1864, during its breakaway from Otago Province (1861 to 1870). He continued serving on the Provincial Council after his superintendency ended. During Menzies' tenure as superintendent, two railways projects were undertaken, a railway to link Invercargill to the port at Bluff and a wooden railway to Winton. The former is now known as the Bluff Branch, while the latter was upgraded to the standards of a normal railway and extended to ultimately form the Kingston Branch. Menzies served on the Legislative Council for 30 years, from 1858 until his death in 1888, and promoted the interests of Southland. James Menzies (Australian Politician)
James Menzies (9 August 18621 November 1945) was an Australian businessman and politician who served in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1911 to 1920, representing the district of Lowan. Before entering politics, he ran the general store in Jeparit, Victoria. He was the father of Robert Menzies, the longest-serving Prime Minister of Australia. Early life Menzies was born in Ballarat West, Victoria, one of the nine surviving children of Elizabeth (née Band) and Robert Menzies. His parents were both Scottish immigrants, meeting soon after their arrival in Australia in 1854 and marrying the following year. His father – born in Renfrewshire – was drawn to Ballarat by the Victorian gold rush, and worked initially as a miner and later as a machinery salesman. His sudden death from pneumonia in 1879 thrust his family into poverty. Menzies had little formal schooling, but was a keen reader. James Menzies (Wisconsin Politician)
James Menzies (September 3, 1830 – March 22, 1913) was a Scottish American farmer and politician. Born in Newtown of Tullymet, Perthshire, Scotland, Menzies emigrated to the United States in 1841 and settled in the town of Harmony, Rock County, Wisconsin Territory. He lived in Dane County, Wisconsin for seven years before returning to the town of Harmony and was a farmer. He was chairman of the Harmony Town Board and served on the Rock County Board of Supervisors. Menzies also served as the town superintendent of public schools. James Mellon Menzies (明义士) (23 February 1885 – 16 March 1957) was a Canadian Presbyterian missionary, archaeologist, professor, and author. He was the first Western scholar to study Shang dynasty Oracle bone script, the earliest form of Chinese writing. In the years following his death, he was considered a leading authority on the Shang dynasty. Early life and education Menzies was born in Clinton, Huron County, Ontario, Canada, on 23 February 1885, to David Redpath Menzies and his wife, Jane McGee, a family of Presbyterian farmers. His grandparents, Robert Menzies and Catherine Redpath, emigrated from Chapel Hill, Logie Almond, Perthshire, Scotland in 1832. He attended the University of Toronto and graduated with a degree of civil engineering in 1907. He was a land surveyor before joining the ministry. He attended Knox College in Toronto. Menzies Creek is a township in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia, 40 km east of Melbourne, Melbourne's Melbourne city centre, Central Business District, located within the Shires of Shire of Cardinia, Cardinia and Shire of Yarra Ranges, Yarra Ranges Local government areas of Victoria, local government areas.
