James McKie (footballer, Born 1873)
James McKie was a Scottish footballer who played as a full-back for Southampton St. Mary's in 1896–97, when they won the Southern League title for the first of six occasions over the next eight years. Football career McKie was born in Dalry, a small town in Ayrshire, Scotland and had served in the 15th Company Royal Artillery. He had been a member of the Freemantle football team before being signed by Southampton St. Mary's in the summer of 1896. He made his debut for the "Saints" at the County Ground in the opening match of the 1896–97 season, a 4–1 victory over Chatham. He played at left-back with his fellow Scotsmen Donald McKay at right-back and William McMillan at right-half. McKay retained his place for a further two games, before being replaced by Samuel Meston, who had moved back to accommodate Willie Naughton on the right wing. James McKie (30 June 1859 – 17 March 1910) was a Scottish businessman of the Jardine, Matheson and Co. Biography McKie was born on 30 June 1859 at Erskine, Renfrewshire, a village where his father was minister of the Church of Scotland. He was enrolled as a pupil of the Manchester Grammar School. After graduation, he joined the Jardine, Matheson and Co. and worked in Shanghai until his death. He was an advocate of the industrial development of China by the aid of railways and the introduction of modern machinery. He was a founding member of the Board of Commissioners of the Shanghai–Nanking Railway. He was also member of the General Committee of the Shanghai Chamber of Commerce and President of the St. Andrew's Society. McKie was enthusiastic in swimming, rowing, fishing, waterfowl-shooting. He co-founded the Shanghai Rowing Club and rowed No. 5 in the Scottish Eight which used to be held on the Soowchow Creek between the Cantonese Cemetery and the Markham Road Bridge. He w ... James M'Kie or James McKie (1816–1891) was an apprentice of Hugh Crawford, John Wilson's successor at the Kilmarnock Cross printing business. In 1867, M'Kie published the first facsimile edition of the 1786 "Kilmarnock Edition" or ''Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect'' as well as various bibliographies, reprints, special editions, limited editions, etc. of Robert Burns' and other works for the Scottish, British, British Empire or North American markets. He became an avid collector of Burnsiana and put together the largest collection of published in the world at the time, that was eventually purchased by the local Kilmarnock Corporation and housed in the Kay Park Burns Museum. Life and character M'Kie was born at Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, on 7 October 1816, reportedly the illegitimate son of James M'Kie, a carpet weaver and Elizabeth Boyd, later married as Elizabeth Brown.
