James McCartan Jnr
James McCartan is an Irish Gaelic football manager and former player who played at senior level for the Down county team between 1990 and 2000. McCartan was part of the Down team that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1991 and 1994. McCartan also won two Ulster Senior Football Championships with the county. At underage level McCartan won Ulster Minor and All-Ireland Minor Football Championship medals. He also won two All Star awards during his career. McCartan usually played as a corner forward. He was renowned for his speed, swerving runs at the defence and scoring ability. McCartan is regarded as one of the Down's best ever footballers. In 2009 to mark the 125th anniversary of the Gaelic Athletic Association he was named by ''The Irish News'' as one of the all-time best 125 footballers from Ulster. The 1991 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 105th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 19 May 1991 and ended on 15 September 1991. In the Munster semi-final Kerry ended Cork's 2 years as All Ireland champions. Down defeated Meath in the final by a scoreline of 1–16 to 1–14. The Ulster county's victory was to be the start of four consecutive All-Ireland titles for the province. Greg Blaney is an Irish dual player who played Gaelic football and hurling for Down in the 1980s and 1990s. He was part of the Down team that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1991 and 1994. Blaney won three Ulster Senior Football Championships and a National League title with Down and won three All Star awards during his career. Daniel McCartan is a Gaelic footballer who plays for his local club Burren GAA and at senior level for the Down county team. He is the younger brother of former Down manager James McCartan Jr. He started at right corner back in the 2010 All-Ireland Football Final where Down were defeated 0–15 to 0-16 by Cork. James McCartan Snr
James McCartan (1938 – 14 August 2021) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played for his local Tullylish club and at senior level for the Down county team from the 1950s until the 1960s. McCartan played primarily as a forward, and was a major figure in Down's All-Ireland SFC victories of 1960 and 1961. He also won Ulster SFC medals and two National League medals, in 1960 and 1962, while playing for his county team. He was Texaco Footballer of the Year for two consecutive years, in 1960 and 1961. He won Railway Cup medals while representing Ulster. Once his playing days came to an end he served as manager of Down during the 1980s when the team won the 1982–83 National Football League.
