James Martin (British Army Officer)
Major General James Rowland Martin, is a senior British Army officer. Since 2021, he has been General Officer Commanding of the 3rd (United Kingdom) Division. Military career Martin was commissioned into the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment with effect from 7 August 1993. He became commander of 1st Armoured Infantry Brigade in November 2018, commander of 16 Air Assault Brigade in July 2020 and General Officer Commanding 3rd (United Kingdom) Division in October 2021. Major General Michael Richard Elviss, (born 18 July 1972) is a senior British Army officer. He currently serves as the Chief of Staff (Operations) at Permanent Joint Headquarters. Education He was educated at the University of Reading (BSc), Cranfield University and King's College London (MA). Military career Elviss was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1993. The 3rd (United Kingdom) Division is a regular army division of the British Army. It was created in 1809 by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, as part of the Anglo-Portuguese Army, for service in the Peninsular War, and was known as the Fighting 3rd under Sir Thomas Picton during the Napoleonic Wars. The division fought at the Battle of Waterloo, as well as during the Crimean War and the Second Boer War. Major general (Maj Gen) is a "two-star" rank in the British Army and Royal Marines. The rank was also briefly used by the Royal Air Force for a year and a half, from its creation to August 1919. In the British Army, a major general is the customary rank for the appointment of division commander. In the Royal Marines, the rank of major general is held by the Commandant General. A Major General is senior to a Brigadier but subordinate to lieutenant general. The rank is OF-7 on the NATO rank scale, equivalent to a rear admiral in the Royal Navy or an air vice-marshal in the Royal Air Force and the air forces of many Commonwealth countries. The 1st Armoured Infantry Brigade was an infantry brigade of the British Army with a long history including service during both the First and the Second World Wars. It was based at Tidworth Camp.
