James Macnaughton MacGregor (6 January 1829 – 8 October 1894) was a Scottish and New Zealand Presbyterian minister and theologian. He was born in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland on 6 January 1829. James Macgregor (1 August 1808 – 5 September 1858) was a British banker, railway chairman and politician. Early life James Macgregor, Esq. (sometimes spelled Mac Gregor or M'Gregor) was born in Liverpool, England on 1 August 1808, the son of Alexander Macgregor, Esq. of Bloomhill in Manchester, England. Business career James Macgregor began his business career as a banker in Liverpool, serving as the manager of Liverpool Commercial Banking Company. In September 1845 Macgregor was elected chairman and managing director of South Eastern Railway. The position gave Macgregor full autonomy over the railway's operations. After nine challenging years dealing with the line's expansion and acrimonious relations with other railways, Macgregor resigned in 1854. In addition to his private business responsibilities, Macgregor served as M.P. for Sandwich, England beginning in 1852 until his defeat in 1857. James MacGregor FRSE (1832–1910) was a Scottish minister and philanthropist. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1891. In 1886 he was made Chaplain in Ordinary to Queen Victoria, in 1901 Chaplain to King Edward VII, and in 1910 to King George V, serving three monarchs in all. Life He was born on 11 July 1832 at Brownhill Farm near Scone, Perthshire, the son of James MacGregor, farmer, and his wife, Margaret MacDougall. He was educated at Scone Parish School, then Perth Academy. He then studied divinity at St Andrews University 1848 to 1855. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Perth in May 1855 and then served in a series of illustrious churches: Paisley High Church (1855-1862); Monimail Church in Fife (1862-1864), Tron Church in Glasgow (1864-1868); Tron Kirk in Edinburgh (1868-1873); and finally St Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh (1873-1910). James Drummond MacGregor
Rev. James Drummond MacGregor ( gd, an t-Urr. Seumas MacGriogar) (December 1759 – 3 March 1830) was an author of Christian poetry in both Scottish and Canadian Gaelic, an abolitionist and Presbyterian minister in Nova Scotia, Canada. Life and career MacGregor was a prolific author of Gaelic poetry, reflecting a wealth of inherited oral tradition, particularly relating to Clan MacGregor of Perthshire. Upon his arrival in 1786, Rev. MacGregor was the first Gaelic-speaking Presbyterian minister in Nova Scotia, which was then experiencing a high rate of immigration from the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Influenced by the Scottish Enlightenment, MacGregor published ''Letter to a Clergyman Urging him to set free a Black Girl he held in Slavery'' in Halifax, Nova Scotia (1788). According to historian Barry Cahill, this document "is the earliest and most outstanding production of white antislavery literature in Canada." James Gordon MacGregor
James Gordon MacGregor, FRS FRSE LLD (31 March 1852 in Halifax, Canada – 21 May 1913 in Edinburgh) was a Canadian physicist. He was described as "brilliant, energetic, nervous, impatient", and not suffering fools gladly. Life MacGregor was born in Halifax in Nova Scotia on 31 March 1852, the son of Rev Peter Gordon MacGregor. He was educated there at the Free Church Academy in Halifax going on to study at Dalhousie University, where he graduated with an MA. He left Nova Scotia to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Leipzig and the University of London. He returned to Nova Scotia to lecture in physics for one academic year (1876/1877) at his alma mater, Dalhousie University. In the summer of 1877 he relocated to England to serve as science master at Clifton College in Bristol.
