James M. Williams
James M. Williams (22 July 1850 – 22 May 1909) was a politician from Cleveland, Ohio, United States. He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio State Senate, and was President of the Senate for two years. Early life James M. Williams was born in Plainfield, Coshocton County, Ohio on July 22, 1850. He was the son of Heslip Williams, a leading physician of the county and Ohio native, and Charlotte Miskimen Williams, also from Ohio. He left school at age thirteen to enlist as a private in Company C, 3rd United States Cavalry during the American Civil War. He served in the campaigns in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. After the war, Williams attended Newcomerstown High School and Allegheny College of Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1873. Legal career Williams studied law in the office of Judge J.C. The president of the Ohio State Senate is the leader of the Ohio State Senate. Under Ohio's first constitution, in effect from 1803 to 1851, the presiding officer of the senate was called the speaker. Starting in 1851, when the second constitution took effect, a new office of lieutenant governor was created. The new position of lieutenant governor carried with it the office of president of the senate, and was nominally the presiding officer of the senate. During this time, the actual legislative leader of the senate majority was the president pro tempore of the Ohio Senate. In the 1970s, another change was made, which made the office of lieutenant governor elected jointly with the governor. At this time, the duty of presiding over the senate was removed from the lieutenant governor's portfolio and the majority party of the senate began electing its own president starting in 1979. Newcomerstown, Ohio
Newcomerstown is a village in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, United States, east-northeast of Columbus. In the late 1770s, this was the largest Delaware Indian village on the Tuscarawas River, with 700 residents. Chief Newcomer (''Netawatwes'') was the leader of the western Delawares here, and they called the village ''Gekelmukpechunk''. Early French traders and English settlers named the village Newcomerstown after the chief. Soon after the start of the American Revolutionary War, the Delawares moved west to Coshocton, about halfway through what is now the next county. Name The name comes from a Lenape (Delaware) village established in the 1760s by Netawatwees (c. 1686-1776), also known as Newcomer. Newcomer migrated to the area from Cuyahoga Falls with his band of Lenape Indians. The Lenape name of the town was ''Gekelukpechink'', meaning "still water."
