James Lord (author)
James Lord (November 27, 1922 – August 23, 2009) was an American writer. He was the author of several books, including critically acclaimed biographies of Alberto Giacometti and Pablo Picasso. He appeared in the documentary films '' Balthus Through the Looking Glass'' (1996) and '' Picasso: Magic, Sex, Death'' (2001). Life and career Lord was born in Englewood, New Jersey, and grew up there, the son of Louise and Albert Lord. His father was a stockbroker, and until the Wall Street crash the family lived, as Lord put it, in "the lower echelons of the upper classes". He graduated from Englewood School for Boys (now Dwight-Englewood School) in 1940. Lord attended Wesleyan University, though he never earned a degree. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was part of the Ritchie Boys who specialized in Military Intelligence. He wrote about his experiences in his book, ''My Queer War'' which discusses keeping his homosexuality carefully hidden."Lord write ... James Lord (unionist)
James Lord (January 30, 1878 – March 13, 1962) was an English-born American labor unionist. Born in England, Lord emigrated to the United States in 1888. He settled in Farmington, Illinois, where he worked at a colliery, and joined the United Mine Workers of America. In 1912, he was elected as vice-president of the union' District 12, covering Illinois. In 1914, the presidency of the Mining Department of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) was made full-time and salaried, and Lord was appointed to the post. During World War I, he additionally served on the Committee on Labor of the Advisory Commission of the Council of National Defense. James Brown Lord (26 April 1859 — 1 June 1902) was an American architect, working in a Beaux-Arts idiom, with a practice in New York City. His Appellate Court House was his most prominent commission, noted at the time of his premature death, at the age of forty-three. He designed one of the first of the Carnegie libraries, the Yorkville Branch of the New York Public Library, at 222 East 79th Street (''illustration''). Biography Lord was born in New York, into a distinguished family, the son of James Couper Lord and grandson of Daniel Lord, a prominent lawyer in New York. His mother was a daughter of James Brown, founder of the firm that became Brown Brothers Harriman. James Frank Lord (November 26, 1948 – June 6, 2008) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the Minnesota state treasurer from 1975 to 1983. Early life and education Born in Chanhassen, Minnesota, Lord was the son of United States District Court Judge Miles Lord. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and a Juris Doctor from the William Mitchell College of Law. Career Lord began his career as an aide in the United States Senate for Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale. He also served in the United States Merchant Marine. In the 1970s, he served as a liaison between Governor Wendell R. Anderson's office other government agencies.
