James Lawrence Bartol
James Lawrence Bartol (June 4, 1813 – June 23, 1887) was an American jurist who served as chief judge of the supreme court of the U.S. state of Maryland, the Court of Appeals. Early life James Lawrence Bartol was born on June 4, 1813, in Havre de Grace, Maryland to George Bartol. After graduating from Jefferson College in 1832, he studied law under the tutelage of Otho Scott, and was admitted to the bar in 1836. From 1836 to 1843, Bartol engaged in law practice in Denton, Maryland, where he helped to establish an Academy. He also practiced law in Baltimore, Maryland, sometime after 1845. From 1857 to 1867, he served as Associate Judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals, and from 1867 to 1883 as Chief Judge. Personal life Bartol married a woman by the last name of Charbounier, with whom he had at least one daughter. Bartol died on June 23, 1887, in Baltimore. Denton is a town in Caroline County, Maryland, United States. The population of Denton was 4,418 as of the 2010 United States Census, and it is the county seat of Caroline County. History Denton was established in 1781. It was first called Eden Town, for Sir Robert Eden, the last royal governor of Maryland, and over time Eden Town was shortened to Denton. The town was incorporated in 1802. The Museum of Rural Life interprets the ag-based heritage of the town and surrounding area. Geography Denton is located at (38.883853, -75.826556). Maryland State Archives
The Maryland State Archives serves as the central depository for government records of permanent value. Its holdings date from Maryland's founding in 1634, and include colonial and state executive, legislative, and judicial records; county probate, land, and court records; church records; business records; state publications and reports; and special collections of private papers, maps, photographs, and newspapers. These records are kept in a humidity and temperature controlled environment and any necessary preservation measures are conducted in the Archives' conservation laboratory.
