James Lawlor Kiernan
James Lawlor Kiernan (26 October 1837 – 29 November 1869) was an Irish-born Brigadier General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Biography Kiernan was born in Mountbellew, County Galway, in 1837; his father being a retired British navy surgeon. Kiernan attended Trinity College, Dublin, before emigrating to the USA about 1854. On the outbreak of the civil war in 1861 he joined the 69th New York Infantry Regiment as Assistant Surgeon. He served as such at Bull Run and in the same capacity to the 6th Missouri Infantry Regiment at Pea Ridge. Kiernan insisted on joining the fighting ranks, and in that capacity was seemingly appointed a Major in the 6th Missouri. In May 1863 at Port Gibson, Missouri, he was wounded in the left lung and left on the field for dead. Recovered and imprisoned, he effected an escape back to Union forces and resigned his commission. During the American Civil War, the Union Army, also known as the Federal Army and the Northern Army, referring to the United States Army, was the land force that fought to preserve the Union (American Civil War), Union of the collective U.S. state, states. Pulmonary Edema
Pulmonary edema, also known as pulmonary congestion, is excessive edema, liquid accumulation in the parenchyma, tissue and pulmonary alveolus, air spaces (usually alveoli) of the lungs. It leads to impaired gas exchange and may cause hypoxemia and respiratory failure. It is due to either failure of the left ventricle of the heart to remove oxygenated blood adequately from the pulmonary circulation (cardiogenic pulmonary edema), or an injury to the lung parenchyma, lung tissue directly or blood vessels of the lung (non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema). Treatment is focused on three aspects: firstly improving respiratory function, secondly, treating the underlying cause, and thirdly preventing further damage and assuring full recovery to the lung.
