James Karnusian
Rev. James Karnusian (1926 in Beirut, Lebanon – April 8, 1998 in Bern, Switzerland) was a Swiss-Armenian pastor, writer and public activist. Biography A son of Armenian genocide survivors from Musa Ler, Karnusian was born in 1926 in a camp of refugees in Beirut. He studied at the universities of Greece and Switzerland. In 1979 he initiated the first Armenian World Congress in Paris. In 1983 on the occasion of the 60th centenary of the Treaty of Lausanne, James Karnusian organized a Pan-Armenian convention in Lausanne attended by delegates from 17 countries. "Our priority remains the recovery of Western Armenia occupied by Turkey," he explained. In 1992 he co-founded the Switzerland-Armenia Association (GSA - Gesellschaft Schweiz-Armenien) together with Hans Schellenberg, civil servant in the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and former deputy of National Council of Switzerland Alexander Euler. Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) was a militant organization active between 1975 and the 1990s whose stated goal was "to compel the Turkish Government to acknowledge publicly its responsibility for the Armenian genocide in 1915, pay reparations, and cede territory for an Armenian homeland." ASALA itself and other sources described it as a guerilla and armed organization. Spurk (in Armenian Սփիւռք pronounced ''Spiurk'' meaning ''diaspora'') is an Armenian literary and public weekly, periodical, or journal, published since 1958 in Beirut, Lebanon. 1958-1989: Literary and general periodical ;1958-1974 - Simon Simonian First published in a tabloid size by the Armenian literary figure Simon Simonian as a weekly, and then as a biweekly (once every two weeks). Kevork Vartani Ajemian (''Adjemian'') (in Armenian Գևորգ Աճեմյան, in Western Armenian Գէորգ Աճեմեան) (May 23, 1932 – December 27, 1998) was a prominent Lebanese-Armenian writer, journalist, novelist, theorist and public activist, and long-time publisher of the Beirut-based literary, artistic and general publication '' Spurk'' (in Armenian Սփիւռք). Ajemian was a co-founder of the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) military organization. Biography Ajemian was born in Manbij, near Aleppo, Syria, into a family of survivors of the Armenian genocide, originally from Sasun. He studied in Aleppo, then in 1952 he moved to Beirut. Hagop Hagopian (guerilla)
Hagop Hagopian (or Agop Agopian; hy, Յակոբ Յակոբեան; 1951–28 April 1988) was one of the founders and the main leader of ASALA. Life Born in Mosul, Iraq as Harutiun Takoshian ( hy, Յարութիւն Թագուշեան), he took the nom de guerre Hagop Hagopian, and moved to Lebanon, where according to some sources he joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. In 1975, along with writer Kevork Ajemian and others, and with the support from Palestinian groups, he founded in Beirut the ASALA. As leader of ASALA, he directed attacks and assassinations of Turkish diplomats and their families in various countries of the world.
