James Johnson (railway Engineer)
James Johnson was an English railway engineer, and was Locomotive Superintendent of the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) from 1890-1894. He was the son of Samuel Waite Johnson, of Midland Railway fame. Locomotive designs At the GNSR, he designed the locomotive classes listed below. Samuel Waite Johnson
Samuel Waite Johnson (14 October 1831 – 14 January 1912) was an English railway engineer, and was Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the Midland Railway from 1873 to 1903. He was born in Bramley, Yorkshire and educated at Leeds Grammar School. Career Johnson learned to become an engineer at the locomotive builders E.B.Wilson and Company. In 1859 Johnson became Acting Locomotive Superintendent at the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. In 1864 he was appointed Locomotive Superintendent of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. In 1866, after only two years in Scotland he replaced Robert Sinclair of the Great Eastern Railway (GER) at Stratford Works. There he stayed for seven years until moving to the Midland Railway (MR) at Derby, where he stayed until his retirement in 1904. Midland Railway
The Midland Railway (MR) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1844. The Midland was one of the largest railway companies in Britain in the early 20th century, and the largest employer in Derby, where it had its headquarters. It amalgamated with several other railways to create the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at grouping in 1922. The Midland had a large network of lines emanating from Derby, stretching to London St Pancras, Manchester, Carlisle, Birmingham, and the South West. It expanded as much through acquisitions as by building its own lines. It also operated ships from Heysham in Lancashire to Douglas and Belfast. The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) D41 class was a type of 4-4-0 steam locomotive inherited from the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR). The class consisted of two similar GNSR classes: 'S' (introduced in 1893 and designed by James Johnson) and 'T' (introduced in 1895 and designed by William Pickersgill). The two classes were similar but with detail differences to the boiler. The locomotives of the Great North of Scotland Railway were used by the Great North of Scotland Railway to operate its lines in the far north-east of the country. The railway opened in 1854 with just five 2-4-0 steam locomotives, and from 1862 it used 4-4-0 exclusively as the wheel arrangement for its tender locomotives. When it expanded by amalgamation in 1866, it inherited some locomotives from these companies. It purchased most of its locomotives, although building a small number itself, two at its first works at Kittybrewster, and ten later at Inverurie Locomotive Works. When the Great North of Scotland became part of the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923, it passed on 122 steam locomotives, 100 4-4-0 tender locomotives and 22 tank engines, all of which were capable of being used on both passenger and goods trains. James Manson (engineer)
James Manson (1845–1935) was a Scottish engineer, born in Saltcoats, Ayrshire. He was Locomotive Superintendent of two Scottish railway companies. Career Manson obtained employment at the Kilmarnock works of the Glasgow and South Western Railway (GSWR) in September 1861 and worked there for eight years. He then spent one year at Barclay Curle and Company, shipbuilders of Govan. This was followed by five years at sea with the Bibby Line during which time he became a chief engineer. He worked again at the GSWR Kilmarnock works from 1875 to October 1883. His next appointment was as Locomotive Superintendent at the Great North of Scotland Railway but he returned to the GSWR in 1890 or 1891 and was appointed Locomotive Superintendent. Retirement and death Manson retired from the GSWR in 1911. William Pickersgill
William Pickersgill (1861 – 2 May 1928) was an English railway engineer, and was chief mechanical engineer of the Caledonian Railway from 1914 until Grouping in 1923. He was appointed locomotive superintendent of the Northern Division of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway but retired in 1925. He died in Bournemouth. Career Great Eastern Railway Pickersgill was born in Nantwich, Cheshire. He started work on the Great Eastern Railway at Stratford in 1876, where he was a Whitworth Exhibitioner, and after several posts in the running department he was appointed district locomotive superintendent in Norwich in 1891.
