James Hutchison (Australian Politician)
James Hutchison (20 April 1859 – 6 December 1909) was an Australian politician and printer. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), serving in the South Australian House of Assembly (1898–1902) and Australian House of Representatives (1903–1909). He was an honorary minister in the First Fisher Ministry (1908–1909). Early life Hutchison was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, received a primary education and was eventually apprenticed as a compositor on the ''Daily Free Press'' and attended the mechanics' institute. He migrated to South Australia in 1884 with fellow worker, John McPherson and they found work on the ''South Australian Register''. In 1886, he married Mary Jane Trebilcock. In 1888, Hutchison and McPherson were sacked for taking part in a strike over their paper's opposition to union labor. In 1889 Hutchison established a press, Hutchison, Craker & Smith, with two other sacked compositors and in 1890 began publishing a satirical paper, ''Quiz''. S ...

White Australia Policy
The White Australia policy is a term encapsulating a set of historical policies that aimed to forbid people of non-European ethnic origin, especially Asians (primarily Chinese) and Pacific Islanders, from immigrating to Australia, starting in 1901. Governments progressively dismantled such policies between 1949 and 1973. Competition in the gold fields between European and Chinese miners, and labour union opposition to the importation of Pacific Islanders (primarily South Sea Islanders) into the sugar plantations of Queensland, reinforced demands to eliminate or minimize low-wage immigration from Asia and the Pacific Islands. From the 1850s colonial governments imposed restrictions on family members joining Chinese miners already in Australia. Johann Theodor Scherk (8 July 1836 – 10 August 1923), generally referred to as J. T. Scherk or Theodor Scherk, was an Australian politician who represented the South Australian House of Assembly multi-member seats of Electoral district of East Adelaide, East Adelaide from 1886 to 1902 and Electoral district of Adelaide, Adelaide from 1902 to 1905. He was born in Kiel, Holstein, Denmark on 8 July 1836 and migrated to South Australia in 1861. He served for a time as president of the Adelaide German Club.
