James Humphreys (printer)
James Humphreys (January 15, 1748 – February 2, 1810) was a printer, publisher, merchant and politician in Nova Scotia and Pennsylvania. He represented Shelburne County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1793 to 1796. Biography James Humphreys was born in Philadelphia, the son of James Humphreys and Susanna Assheton. He studied medicine at the College of Philadelphia but left without completing his degree. Humphreys then apprenticed as a printer with William Bradford and established his own business in 1772, printing books and a number of pamphlets. In 1775, he began publishing the ''Pennsylvania Ledger: or the Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, & New Jersey Weekly Advertiser'', a newspaper loyal to the British cause. In 1776, he fled the city but returned in 1777 when the British regained control of Philadelphia. James Humphreys (c. 1768 – 29 November 1830) was a Welsh barrister, law reformer and legal writer. He was educated at Shrewsbury School and called to the bar in 1800 by Lincoln's Inn. Politically he was a liberal. His major publication in the field of law reform was ''Observations on the Actual State of the English Laws of Real Property, with the outlines of a Code'' (1826). Life A native of Montgomeryshire, Humphreys was articled to a solicitor named Yeomans at Worcester. He then entered Lincoln's Inn in November 1789, read with Charles Butler, was called to the bar (25 June 1800), and obtained a good practice as a conveyancer. In politics Humphreys was a Whig and liberal, and was friendly with Charles James Fox, Henry Clifford, Sir James Mackintosh, and Sir Francis Burdett. He went to John Horne Tooke's parties at Wimbledon, and delivered a course of lectures on law at the newly founded University of London. James William Humphreys (7 January 1930 – September 2003) was an English businessman and criminal who owned a chain of adult book shops and strip clubs in London in the 1960s and 1970s. He was able to run his business through the payment of large bribes to serving police officers, particularly those from the Obscene Publications Branch#History, Obscene Publications Branch (OPB) of the Metropolitan Police. His diaries—which detailed meetings he had held with police officers, the venues of the meetings and the amounts of bribes paid—provided evidence for the investigation by anti-corruption officers of the Metropolitan Police. Humphreys became involved in petty crime early in life, and was first arrested at the age of 15. James Humphreys (10 February 1894 – 23 December 1956) was an Irish people, Irish hurling, hurler who played as a midfielder for the Limerick GAA, Limerick senior team. Humphreys was a regular member of the starting fifteen for over a decade from the 1910s until the 1920s. During that time he won two All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland medals and three Munster Senior Hurling Championship, Munster medals. He was also captain of the Ireland team during the 1924 Tailteann Games (Irish Free State), Tailteann Games.
