James Hewlett (painter)
James Hewlett (1768–1836) was an English flower-painter. Life James Hewlett, born on 15 September 1768, was the son of a gardener and an associate in boyhood of John Britton (antiquary), John Britton, the Wiltshire antiquary. He practised chiefly at Bath, Somerset, Bath, painting flowers in water-colours, which are noted for good drawing, colour, and botanical accuracy. He occasionally painted other subjects, such as Romani people, gipsies, and contributed to the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Academy and other exhibitions.Cust 1891, p. 309. Death He died at Park House, Isleworth, on 18 August 1836, and was buried in All Saints' Church, Isleworth, Isleworth Church, where a monument was erected by his widow. James Hewlett (actor)
James Hewlett ( fl. 1821 – 1849) was an African-American actor. He was principal actor in and co-creator of William Alexander Brown's African Grove Theatre in New York City. Life Hewlett started performing as a vocalist and as an actor described as "Shakespeare's proud Representative" in the African Grove when it was just an exhibition held in Brown's tea garden. Hewlett is best known for starring in African Grove's performance of '' Richard III''. After the closure of the theatre, he began to tour performing excerpts from plays; historian Shane White suggests that Hewlett may have been "the best-known black New Yorker" around 1831. He also visited the United Kingdom and apparently performed in Liverpool, although documentary evidence of this is limited. His career seems to have entered into a decline by and after 1834, when he was imprisoned for larceny. He is reported to have died around 1849. James Monroe Hewlett
James "Monroe" Hewlett (August 1, 1868 – October 18, 1941) was an American Beaux Arts architect, scenic designer, and muralist. Hewlett was born into an old Long Island family at Rock Hall in Lawrence, New York. He is descended from a long line of Hewletts for which the town of Hewlett, New York is named. Hewlett graduated from Columbia University School of Mines in 1890. During his time at Columbia, Hewlett studied architecture under William Robert Ware and was captain of the varsity football team. After a year of study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he joined the prestigious architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, where he met his future business partner Austin W. Lord. In 1894, he and Lord founded the New York architectural firm of Lord and Hewlett. The firm designed many notable buildings and monuments.
