James Hammond (author)
James Hammond (1710–1742) was an English poet and politician. Life Born on 22 May 1710, he was the second son of Anthony Hammond of Somersham Place, Huntingdonshire, who married Jane, only daughter of Sir Walter Clarges. His mother was famous for her wit; the father was a wit, politician, and spendthrift. Hammond was educated at Westminster School; at about the age of 18 Noel Broxholme, his future brother-in-law, introduced him to Lord Chesterfield. He soon became a member of the clique around Frederick, Prince of Wales: Cobham, Lyttelton, and Pitt. In 1733 his relative Nicholas Hammond left Hammond £400 a year, and he became attached to the prince's court as an equerry. Through the prince's influence, as Duke of Cornwall, Hammond was returned to parliament on 13 May 1741 as member for . James Henry Hammond
James Henry Hammond (November 15, 1807 – November 13, 1864) was an attorney, politician, and planter from South Carolina. He served as a United States representative from 1835 to 1836, the 60th Governor of South Carolina from 1842 to 1844, and a United States senator from 1857 to 1860. A slave owner, he is considered one of the strongest supporters of slavery in the years before the American Civil War. Acquiring property through marriage, Hammond ultimately owned 22 square miles, several plantations and houses, and more than 300 enslaved people. Through his wife's family, he was a brother-in-law of Wade Hampton II and uncle to his children, including Wade Hampton III. When the senior Hampton learned that Hammond had raped his four Hampton nieces as teenagers, he made the scandal public. James Hammond Trumbull
James Hammond Trumbull (December 20, 1821 – August 5, 1897) was an American historian, philologist, bibliographer, and politician. A scholar of American Indian languages, he served as the first Connecticut State Librarian in 1854 and as Secretary of State from 1861 to 1866. Early life and education Trumbull was born in Stonington, Connecticut, to parents Gurdon and Sarah Ann (Swan) Trumbull. His mother was descended from Stonington's first colonists; his father was a wealthy merchant and state legislator, distantly related to Governor Jonathan Trumbull. James Trumbull's siblings included clergyman and author Henry Clay Trumbull and entomologist and author Annie Trumbull Slosson. Trumbull studied at Tracy's Academy in Norwich and enrolled at Yale University in 1838. He never received his degree, withdrawing before the end of his junior year because of ill health. James Thaddeus Hammond
James Thaddeus Hammond (born December 11, 1856 – October 9, 1942) was the first Secretary of State of Utah. Hammond was born in Farmington, Utah Territory, in 1856. He was baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1864. From 1881 to 1882 he served as a Mormon missionary in the Southern States Mission. He was a lawyer and also involved in business. In 1884 and 1886 he served in the Utah Territorial Senate. In 1895, he was elected Secretary of State and was reelected in 1900. Jim Hammond (footballer)
Herbert Edward "Jim" Hammond (7 November 1907 – 16 June 1985) was an English professional footballer who played as a forward. After playing non-League football for Lewes, he signed for Football League side Fulham. He became a prolific goalscorer for the club, scoring 150 goals which remained a club record until the 1950s. He also played cricket for Sussex, appearing in 196 matches. Career Born in Brighton, Hammond was a noted sportsman from a young age and represented the county of Sussex in football at the age of 16. He began his senior career with non-league club Lewes, before signing for Football League Third Division South side Fulham in 1928. Hammond played for Fulham between 1928 and 1938, scoring 150 goals in 342 games. Jim Hammond (7 August 1907 – 30 March 1980) was a British trade union leader and communist activist. Born in Wigan in Lancashire, Hammond left school at the age of thirteen, and began working at the Victoria Colliery. He worked underground while also studying mining engineering at the Wigan Mining College. He became active in the Lancashire and Cheshire Miners' Federation (LCMF), and in 1933 he was sacked for his union activity.
