James Gormly
James Gormly (24 July 1836 – 19 May 1922) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born in Elphin in County Roscommon to grazier Patrick Gormly and Mary Docray. The family migrated to Sydney in January 1840 and Gormly received some education at Wollongong before the family went droving around Nangue and Gundagai. After settling in Wagga Wagga in 1854, Gormly became a mail carrier, eventually selling out to Cobb & Co. in 1872. On 28 December 1858 he married Margaret Jane Cox at Holbrook; they would have eight children. In 1885 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Murrumbidgee. Associated with the emerging Protectionist Party, he transferred to the seat of Wagga Wagga in 1894. Elphin, County Roscommon
Elphin (; ) is a small town in north County Roscommon, Ireland. It forms the southern tip of a triangle with Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon to the north west and north east respectively. It is at the junction of the R368 and R369 regional roads. Ireland West Airport Knock is west of Elphin - approximately 40 minutes by road. History Elphin has historically been an important market town and the diocesan centre for the Diocese of Elphin. St Patrick is believed to have visited Elphin, consecrated its first church and ordained its first bishop, Asicus (subsequently the patron saint of Elphin). Auber Jones
Auber George Jones (1832 – 30 December 1887) was an Australian grazier and newspaper owner who represented Murrumbidgee for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1882 to 1885. Born in Jericho, Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania), Jones moved to Melbourne and then to New South Wales to manage a station near Wagga Wagga. He became a wealthy pastoralist and held numerous properties in Lachlan and on the Bogan River during the 1860s and 1870s. Jones and Thomas Darlow established the ''Wagga Wagga Advertiser'' (now the '' Daily Advertiser'') in 1868. Life Auber George Jones was born in 1832, in Jericho, Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania). Thomas Fitzpatrick (New South Wales Politician)
Thomas Fitzpatrick (10 June 1835 – 29 February 1920) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born at Montrath in Queen's County, the son of Jeremiah Fitzpatrick and Mary Delany. He grew up on his parents' farm and in 1857 at the age of twenty-one migrated to Melbourne, soon moving on to the Riverina. In 1868 he became manager of a station at Temora. He married Ellen Sproule in 1869; they had four children. Around 1870 Fitzpatrick bought his own land near Junee, building up an extensive property known as Erinvale Estate. In 1894 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Protectionist member for Murrumbidgee. He served until his defeat in 1904. Arthur Rae
Arthur Edward George Rae (14 March 1860 – 25 November 1943) was a New Zealand-born Australian politician. Born in Christchurch to Charles and Ann Rae (née Beldam), he received a primary education at Blenheim before migrating to Australia in 1878, where he became a miner, shearer and journalist. He was secretary of the New South Wales Shearers' Union during the 1890 strike. He also served as Vice-President, President and Honorary-General Secretary of the Australian Workers' Union. In 1891, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as one of the three members for Murrumbidgee, leaving the Assembly in 1894. In 1910, Rae was elected to the Australian Senate as a Labor Senator from New South Wales. He held the seat until his defeat in 1914. He returned to the Senate, after a break of over ten years, in 1929 (elected in 1928). David Copland
David Copland (1842 – 20 July 1920) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Forfar to merchant David Copland and Ann Christison. He was about twelve when the family moved to New South Wales, and he eventually became a merchant and pastoralist. Around 1870 he married Elizabeth Laird Dorward Hovell, with whom he had six children. In 1889 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Protectionist member for Murrumbidgee. John Gale (journalist)
John Gale (17 April 183115 July 1929) was an Australian newspaper proprietor, lay preacher and politician. He was the founder of ''The Queanbeyan Age'', the first newspaper to serve the Queanbeyan district in New South Wales. He was also an advocate for the Queanbeyan-Canberra area as the best site of a future Australian national capital, for which he is sometimes called the "Father of Canberra" (although that epithet is also applied to Sir Austin Chapman). He served a single term as Member for Murrumbidgee in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Life Gale was born in Bodmin, Cornwall, England, in 1831 and educated at Monmouth Grammar School. Alexander Bolton
Alexander Thorley Bolton (11 October 1847 – 23 February 1918) was an Australian politician. He was born at Hexham to clergyman Robert Thorley Bolton and Jane Martha Ball. A commercial agent based in Wagga Wagga, he married Martha Elizabeth Devlin on 22 October 1874; they had five children. In 1885 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Murrumbidgee, but he did not recontest in 1887. George Dibbs
Sir George Richard Dibbs KCMG (12 October 1834 – 5 August 1904) was an Australian politician who was Premier of New South Wales on three occasions. Early years Dibbs was born in Sydney, son of Captain John Dibbs, who 'disappeared' in the same year. He was educated at the Australian College under Dr Lang, obtained a position as a young man in a Sydney wine merchant's business, and afterwards was in partnership as a merchant with a brother. In 1857, he married Anne Maria Robey. He travelled abroad, and established a branch in Valparaiso in 1865, which involved running a Spanish blockade during the Chincha Islands War. In 1867 his business failed and he went bankrupt, but eight years later called his one time creditors together and paid them all in full. George Cumberlege Loughnan (1842 – 18 January 1896) was an Australian politician. He was born at Hobart in Van Diemen's Land; his father John Michael Loughnan was a captain in the 10th Bengal Lancers. His father farmed at Gippsland in Victoria.
