James Gilkes
James Gilkes (born 21 September 1952) is a former sprinter from Guyana who specialised in the 200 metres. Career He was Athletics at the 1975 Pan American Games, 1975 Pan American 200 metre champion, and in Athletics at the 1979 Pan American Games, 1979 he took the silver medal in the same event. He was runner up to Don Quarrie of Jamaica in the 1978 Amateur Athletics Association, AAA's 200 metres event. At the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton he finished fourth in the 100 metre final, then took the silver medal in the 200 metres, finishing behind Allan Wells of Scotland. In 1978, Gilkes was denied a world record for the 4x200 m relay; while the Tobias Striders team he was a member of broke the old world record with a time of 1:20.23, but this was rejected as a record because the team members were from different countries. Tobias Striders
The Southern California Striders (also SoCal Striders or SC Striders) is a track and field athletics club based in Los Angeles, California. From its foundation in 1955 through the 1980s it was an elite club producing numerous national and Olympic champions. For a time in the 1970s it was called the Tobias Striders for sponsorship reasons. From the 1990s to 2006 the club was restricted to masters athletics and still produces national champions in older age classes. After 2006 it became a nonprofit open to all ages. The IAAF Golden Events were a sporadic series of twelve athletics events organised by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) from 1978 to 1982. Clancy Edwards (born August 9, 1955) is a retired track and field sprinter from the United States. He was considered one of the best sprinters in the world between 1974 and 1978. He won the 200 metres at the 1977 IAAF World Cup, the most important meet of that year, defeating future World Record holder Pietro Mennea. While in high school, he ran for Santa Ana High School His 21.32 (converted from a hand time of 21.2) for 220 yards winning the 1973 CIF California State Meet was the best time in Orange County, California for twelve years. He was also 2nd in the 100-yard dash. Edwards began his collegiate career at Cal Poly in 1974, running for their track team, the Cal Poly Mustangs (where he won titles under the tutelage of coach Steve Simmons), and Santa Ana Junior College in 1975. James Sanford (born December 27, 1957) is a retired track and field sprinter from the United States. He was champion at the 100 metres at the 1979 IAAF Athletics World Cup in Montreal. He also held the best time for the 100 metres at a low altitude for one year, a time of 10.02 seconds, until Carl Lewis improved this record to 10.00 seconds in May 1981. Career While running for Pasadena High School, Sanford won the 400 metres, anchored his team to victory in the 4x400 metres relay and was second in the 200 metres (a race brother Michael was to win the next two years) at the 1977 CIF California State Meet.
