James Frank Woods
James Frank Woods (June 27, 1872 – June 24, 1930) was a major landowner during the Kingdom of Hawaii who was related to royalty and many civil leaders. Life His father was James Woods, who was born in Liverpool, England in 1845, and came to the Hawaiian Islands in 1860 to work for Janion & Green (later the " Big Five" firm Theo H. Davies & Co.), which had been based in England. In 1866 his father moved to the cattle-ranching area known as Waimea where he worked to import improved cattle breeds to replace the wild cattle that had previously roamed the island of Hawaiʻi. He served in a number of government posts in the Kohala district including a term in the legislature of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and eventually became part owner of several sugarcane plantations in Hawaii and cattle ranches. Waimea is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. Parker Ranch is a working cattle ranch on the Island of Hawaii in the U.S. state of Hawaii, now run by a charitable trust. History The ranch was founded in 1847 and is one of the oldest ranches in the United States, pre-dating many mainland ranches in Texas and other southwestern states by more than 30 years. Elizabeth Kahanu Kaʻauwai Kalanianaʻole Woods (March 8, 1879 – February 20, 1932) was the wife of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, Hawaii's second delegate to Congress. Early life She was born in Makawao, Maui on March 8, 1879, and during her childhood was a protégée of her cousin, Queen Kapiʻolani. Kalanianaʻole's father was a lesser chief of the island of Maui named George Kaleiwohi Kaʻauwai (1843–1883) and his wife (Elizabeth's mother) was Ulalia Muolo Keaweaheulu Laʻanui (1848–1911). Lincoln "Link" Loy McCandless (September 18, 1859 – October 5, 1940) was a United States cattle rancher, industrialist and politician for the Territory of Hawaii. McCandless served in the United States Congress as a territorial delegate. A former member of the Hawaii Republican Party, McCandless was one of the earliest leaders of the Hawaii Democratic Party. Charmian London (née Kittredge; November 27, 1871 – January 14, 1955) was an American writer and the second wife of Jack London. Early life "Clara" Charmian Kittredge was born to poet and writer Dayelle "Daisy" Wiley and California hotelier Willard "Kitt" Kittredge at a railroad outpost south of Los Angeles. The Hawaiian Independent Party (later renamed the Independent Home Rule Party), was a political party active in Hawaii from 1900 to 1912. It was established by Robert Wilcox immediately after the United States annexed the Hawaiian Islands and established the Territory of Hawaii.
