James Fairlie (minister)
James Fairlie (c.1588 – 1658) was a Scottish minister of the Church of Scotland. He was minister of Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh and briefly served as both Professor of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh (1629-30) and as Bishop of Argyll (1637-8). Life Fairlie was born in Edinburgh around 1588, the son of an "honest burgess". He studied at the University of Edinburgh, gaining an MA in 1607 at the age of 19. He then served as a "regent" of the University. In 1625, he was appointed minister of South Leith Parish Church in the harbour area of Edinburgh. In 1629 he was appointed Professor of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh. In November 1630, he replaced John Duncanson as "second charge" to Old Greyfriars alongside Rev Andrew Ramsay in "first charge". He resigned in July 1637, having been elected Bishop of Argyll in place of Bishop Boyd but was deposed from this position by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1638. James Ogilvie Fairlie
James Ogilvie Fairlie (10 October 1809 – 5 December 1870) was a Scottish amateur golfer and landowner. Fairlie placed eighth in the 1861 Open Championship. He was a mentor to Old Tom Morris who named his son, James Ogilvie Fairlie Morris, after him. Fairlie was a founding member of Prestwick Golf Club in 1851. Playing on the Old Course at St. Andrews, Fairlie won the Silver Cross Medal in 1849, 1854, and 1860. He won the Gold Medal (King's Medal) in 1857 and 1862. Fairlie served as the captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and was the principal organiser of the first Open Championship held at Prestwick in 1860. Fairlie was a friend and frequent playing partner of the Earl of Eglinton, Archibald Montgomerie, who donated the "Challenge Belt" that was awarded to the Open Championship winner. James McGregor Fairlie is a Scottish National Party (SNP) politician who has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Perthshire South and Kinross-shire since May 2021. Early life In 1996, as a sheep farmer, Fairlie launched Perth Farmers' Market. His father Jim Fairlie was a senior member of the SNP for several decades and stood as an unsuccessful candidate in several elections; his brother Andrew (died 2019) was a renowned chef.
