James Edmund Burke
James Edmund Burke (April 23, 1849 – May 4, 1943) was an American politician who served as the 18th, 20th, 22nd, and 27th List of mayors of Burlington, Vermont, mayor of Burlington, Vermont. A Democratic Party (United States), Democrat, he also served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1925 to 1927, 1931 to 1935, and 1937 to 1939. Early life James Edmund Burke was born in Williston, Vermont on April 23, 1849, a son of Irish Americans, Irish immigrants James and Ann Burke; his parents named him for Irish statesman Edmund Burke. He was educated in the public schools of Williston and at Williston Academy. In 1870 Burke married Sarah Roakes and in May 1873, they moved to Burlington, where he worked as a blacksmith. West Rutland is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,214 at the 2020 census. The town center, located in the south-central portion of the town and where about 87% of the population resides, is defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as a census-designated place (CDP). The Vermont Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the U.S. state of Vermont. From the time of the American Civil War until the 1960s, Vermont was an almost exclusively Republican state, with Republicans dominating Vermont politics, especially the governorship, from 1854 to 1960. Burlington International Airport is a joint-use civil-military airport serving Burlington, Vermont, the state of Vermont's largest municipality. It is owned by the City of Burlington and located in the neighboring city of South Burlington, three nautical miles (6 km) east of Burlington's central business district.
