James Eadie (barrister)
Sir James Raymond Eadie, KC (born March 1962) is a British barrister. Since January 2009, he has served as the First Treasury Counsel (Common Law) or " Treasury Devil", the government's independent barrister on legal issues of national importance. He represented the UK Government in the '' R (Miller and Dos Santos) v Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union'' case in 2016, and in the '' R (Miller) v The Prime Minister'' case in 2019. Eadie was born in March 1962 in Kensington, London, England. He attended Radley College and Magdalene College, Cambridge. He was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1984 and took silk in 2008. He was appointed knight bachelor in the 2018 Birthday Honours List. In September 2019, he represented the British government in the Supreme Court case to determine the legality of Boris Johnson's prorogation. Devilling
Devilling is the period of training, pupillage or junior work undertaken by a person wishing to become an advocate in one of the English-speaking common law systems of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Hong Kong, and Australia. Etymology While there is currently no consensus on the origin of the term, it likely was borrowed from the existing phrase 'printer's devil', (or printer's apprentice) the origin of which is also in dispute. One possible explanation is that, in the earliest stages of moveable type, most if not all printings were of bibles and biblical passages. When an error occurred with the new and complex technology, the mistake would be blamed on the Devil. As the profession grew, young apprentices were equally easy to blame, and thus became the replacement scapegoat for any errors. Shamima Begum
Shamima Begum (born 25 August 1999) is a British born woman, who left the UK in 2015 aged 15. She obtained entry to Syria to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). In February 2019, Sajid Javid, the Home Secretary, acting for the Government of the United Kingdom revoked her British citizenship. He later stated that she would never be allowed to return to the UK. In July 2020, the Court of Appeal ruled that Begum should be permitted to return to the UK in order fairly to contest the Home Secretary’s decision by instructing lawyers properly. This ruling was appealed to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom which, on 26 February 2021, ruled unanimously against her, reversing the decision of the Court of Appeal and preventing her return.
