Searsmont, Maine
Searsmont is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,400 at the 2020 census. History Located at the junction of several well-marked Indian trails, Searsmont was originally called Quantabacook. The town was a part of the Waldo Patent purchased by a consortium of wealthy Boston investors that included David Sears. First settled in 1804 and called Fraternity Village by Ben Ames Williams, it was incorporated on February 5, 1814, as Searsmont, named after its proprietor. The town was noted for its productive soil, water power and abundant forests of white pine. By 1859, when the population was 1,693, it had 15 sawmills and two gristmills. In 1886, it had five lumber mills; three cooperages; a sash; blind and pump factory; four carriage factories; a tannery; a boot and shoe factory; and a coffin and bedstead factory. Montville is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,020 at the 2020 census. History Montville was incorporated on February 18, 1807, and was named for the French word for "mountain town". Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which, of it is land and is water. Principle bodies of water are Trues Pond (173 acres), Kingdom Bog (90 acres), Ledge Pond (24 acres) and Mud Pond (15 acres). The town is crossed by state routes SR 220 and SR 3. State Route 3 (SR 3) is a state highway located in southern Maine. It is a major interregional highway, connecting the Interstate 95 corridor to the Atlantic coast. The western terminus is at SR 8, SR 11 and SR 27 in Augusta and the eastern terminus is at SR 102 and SR 198 in Mount Desert. Major cities and towns along the length of SR 3 include Augusta, Belfast, Ellsworth, and Bar Harbor. Route description SR 3 begins at Civic Center Drive ( SR 8/ SR 11/ SR 27) in the northwest corner of Augusta. SR 3 heads east using the Augusta Bypass, a controlled-access road completed in 2004 to alleviate congestion in the city center caused by traffic headed to and from I-95.
