James David Forbes
James David Forbes (1809–1868) was a Scottish physicist and glaciologist who worked extensively on the conduction of heat and seismology. Forbes was a resident of Edinburgh for most of his life, educated at its University and a professor there from 1833 until he became principal of the United College of St Andrews in 1859. He invented an inverted pendulum seismometer in 1842. Life and work Forbes was born on 20 April 1809 at 86 George Street in Edinburgh, the fourth son of Sir William Forbes, 7th Baronet, of Monymusk and Pitsligo (1773–1828) and Williamina Belches of Invermay. His brothers were the advocate and agriculturalist Sir John Stuart Hepburn Forbes of Fettercairn and Pitsligo and the banker Charles Forbes. He entered the University of Edinburgh in 1825, and soon afterwards began to contribute papers to the ''Edinburgh Philosophical Journal'' anonymously under the signature "Δ". John Leslie (physicist)
Sir John Leslie, FRSE KH (10 April 1766 – 3 November 1832) was a Scottish mathematician and physicist best remembered for his research into heat. Leslie gave the first modern account of capillary action in 1802 and froze water using an air-pump in 1810, the first artificial production of ice. In 1804, he experimented with radiant heat using a cubical vessel filled with boiling water. One side of the cube is composed of highly polished metal, two of dull metal (copper) and one side painted black. He showed that radiation was greatest from the black side and negligible from the polished side. The apparatus is known as a Leslie cube. John Stuart Hepburn Forbes
Sir John Stuart Hepburn Forbes, 8th Baronet, of Monymusk, of Fettercairn and Pitsligo, FRSE (1804–1866) was a Scottish baronet, landowner, advocate and agriculturalist. His name sometimes appears as Hepburn-Forbes. Life He was born in Dean House in western Edinburgh on 25 September 1804 the son of Williamina Belches Stuart of Invermay and Sir William Forbes of Monymusk and Pitsligo, 7th baronet. His younger brothers included James David Forbes. He studied law at the University of Edinburgh, and qualified as an advocate in 1826. When his father died in 1828 he became 8th baronet, and took over the family home at 86 George Street. His country estate was at Fettercairn. In 1833 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh his proposer being Thomas Charles Hope. He died in London on 28 May 1866. Invermay () is a diffuse settlement in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. It is situated approximately 2 km southeast of Forteviot on the Water of May, some 8 km southwest of Perth. Monymusk ( gd, Monadh Musga) is a planned village in the Marr area of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. History Malcolm Canmore first established Celtic foundation on the site in 1078 The Culdees of Munimusc are recorded as inhabiting the site in 1170. Monymusk Priory, an Augustinian priory, was built by Gilchrist, Earl of Mar, around 1200.
