James Daly (died 1769)
James Daly ( – 1769) was an Irish Member of Parliament. In 1741 he was elected to the Irish House of Commons for Athenry, and then in 1768 for the borough of Galway. He was son of Denis Daly of Carrownakelly, County Galway, and grandson of Denis Daly, a judge of the Court of Common Pleas (Ireland). He was married firstly to Bridget, daughter of Francis Bermingham, 14th Baron Athenry and Lady Mary Nugent, and secondly to Catherine, daughter of Sir Ralph Gore, 4th Baronet and his second wife Elizabeth Ashe. Denis Daly (Galway Politician)
Denis Daly (1748 – 10 October 1791) of Carrownakelly and Dunsandle Castle, Loughrea, County Galway, was an Irish landowner and politician. Biography His father was James Daly of Carrownakelly and Dunsandle in County Galway, and his mother was Catherine Gore, daughter of Sir Ralph Gore, 4th Baronet and his second wife Elizabeth Ashe. He was the eldest of five sons. His siblings included St George Daly, judge of the Court of King's Bench (Ireland). He was the great-grandson of Denis Daly, judge of the Court of Common Pleas (Ireland). Though traditionally Roman Catholics, and of Gaelic origin, the Dalys had been able to hold on to their lands by converting to the Protestant faith and forsaking their allegiance to the Stuart dynasty. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, but there is no record of his taking a degree there. Daly owned estates in County Mayo, County Galway, County Clare, and County Limerick. James Daly, 1st Baron Dunsandle and Clanconal (1 April 1782 – 7 August 1847) was an Irish politician. Background Daly was the eldest son of Denis Daly and Lady Henrietta, daughter of Robert Maxwell, 1st Earl of Farnham and Henrietta Cantillon, widow of the 3rd Earl of Stafford. The Right Reverend Robert Daly was his younger brother. Education Daly was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Political career Daly was elected Member of Parliament for Galway Borough in 1805, a seat he held until 1811. In 1812 he was returned for County Galway, a constituency he represented until 1830 and again from 1832 to 1835. He saw the waning of Daly's influence in the political representation of both the borough and county of Galway, at the national level. A Tory, he represented the county until 1833 when he lost his seat to Catholic representatives. St George Daly
St George Daly (1758 – December 1829) was an Irish judge, who had a reputation for ignorance of the law. He owed his career advancement entirely to his support for the Act of Union 1801, which did nothing to enhance his standing in the legal profession. Background He was the fifth son of James Daly MP, of Carrownakelly and Dunsandle, by his second wife Catherine Gore, daughter of Sir Ralph Gore, 4th Baronet and Elizabeth Ashe, daughter of St George Ashe, Bishop of Derry and Jane St. George. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, entered Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the Irish Bar in 1783. Denis Daly, a much respected but short-lived politician, was his eldest brother. The Dalys were a long-established landowning family in County Galway. The Irish House of Commons was the lower house of the Parliament of Ireland that existed from 1297 until 1800. The upper house was the House of Lords. The membership of the House of Commons was directly elected, but on a highly restrictive franchise, similar to the unreformed House of Commons in contemporary England and Great Britain. Catholics were disqualified from sitting in the Irish parliament from 1691, even though they comprised the vast majority of the Irish population. The Irish executive, known as the Dublin Castle administration, under the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, was not answerable to the House of Commons but to the British government. However, the Chief Secretary for Ireland was usually a member of the Irish parliament. In the Commons, business was presided over by the Speaker. Sir Ralph Gore, 4th Baronet
Sir Ralph Gore, 4th Baronet (c. 1675 – 23 February 1733) was a Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. He is now chiefly remembered for building Belle Isle Castle. The Gore Baronetcy, of Magherabegg in the County of Donegal, was created in the Baronetage of Ireland on 2 February 1622 for Paul Gore (shown also as 1st baronet of Manor Gore, the Anglicized version). Ralph was the eldest son of Sir William Gore, 3rd Baronet and his wife Hannah Hamilton, daughter and co-heiress of James Hamilton of Manorhamilton and niece of Gustavus Hamilton, 1st Viscount Boyne. Ralph inherited the estate of Manorhamilton from his mother. He was appointed High Sheriff of Leitrim for 1710. The fourth Baronet served as Chancellor of the Irish Exchequer and as Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. Francis Bermingham, 14th Baron Athenry
Francis de Bermingham, 14th Baron Athenry (1692 – 1749), was an Anglo-Irish peer. He was the only son of Edward Bermingham, 13th Baron Athenry, and his second wife Bridget Browne, daughter of Colonel John Browne and Maud Bourke. Francis de Bermingham was born the year after the Battle of Aughrim, and in the year the Treaty of Limerick was signed, bringing an end to the Williamite War in Ireland. His family lost much property as a result of the fighting, and Francis in 1709 conformed to the Church of Ireland to safeguard his remaining lands, as his father had before him. He is buried in the Dominican Friary, Athenry, founded by his ancestor in 1241. His only surviving son and heir Thomas (son of his first wife, Lady Mary Nugent, daughter of Thomas Nugent, 4th Earl of Westmeath and Margaret Bellew), was created Earl of Louth, while his widow, Ellis, daughter of James Agar, dowager Viscountess of Mayo, was given the title Countess of Brandon for life.
