James Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone
Sir James Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone, 2nd Baronet (20 November 1805 – 26 December 1886) was a British Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons in two periods between 1857 and 1880. Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone was the son of Sir Robert Dalrymple-Home-Elphinstone, 1st Baronet and his wife Graeme Hepburn daughter of Colonel Hepburn, of Keith. He was educated at the Musselburgh Grammar School. He served as a naval officer for the Honourable East India Company for many years and retired as Commander in 1834. In 1848, he inherited the baronetcy on the death of his father. He was a J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for Aberdeenshire. Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone stood for parliament unsuccessfully at Greenock in 1852. He was elected Member of Parliament for Portsmouth in 1857 and held the seat until 1865 when he was defeated. 1857 United Kingdom General Election
In the 1857 United Kingdom general election, the Whigs, led by Lord Palmerston, won a majority in the House of Commons as the Conservative vote fell significantly. The election had been provoked by a vote of censure in Palmerston's government over his approach to the ''Arrow'' affair which led to the Second Opium War. There is no separate tally of votes or seats for the Peelites. They did not contest elections as an organised party but more as independent Free trade Conservatives with varying degrees of distance from the two main parties. According to A. J. P. General Robert Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone (1 March 1718 – 20 April 1794), born Robert Dalrymple-Horn, was a senior British Army commander of the 18th century. Early life and family Robert Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone was born on 1 March 1718 in the Scottish city of Edinburgh. He was the son of the judge Hew Dalrymple of Drummore and his wife Ann Horn. In 1754, he married Mary Elphinstone, a daughter of Sir James Elphinstone, 3rd Baronet. Thereafter, he changed his surname to Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone. Robert and Mary Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone had six children, including Sir Robert Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone, the first of the Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone baronets. Military career From 1762 to 1763, Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone was only the Colonel of the short-lived 120th Regiment of Foot. In 1780, he was appointed as the Colonel of the 53rd Regiment. Sir Henry Drummond Charles Wolff (12 October 1830 – 11 October 1908), known as Henry Drummond Wolff, was an English diplomat and Conservative Party politician, who started as a clerk in the Foreign Office. Background Wolff was born in Malta, the son of Joseph Wolff and Lady Georgiana Mary Walpole, daughter of Horatio Walpole, 2nd Earl of Orford. His father was a missionary who had converted from Judaism to Catholicism and then Anglicanism, and his mother was the niece of Prime Minister Robert Walpole. Wolff was educated at Rugby School. Political and diplomatic career Wolff sat in parliament for Christchurch from 1874 to 1880 and for Portsmouth from 1880 to 1885. Thomas Charles Bruce
Thomas Charles Bruce (15 February 1825 – 23 November 1890) was a British barrister and a Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1874 to 1885. Bruce was the youngest son of the Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, and his wife Elizabeth Oswald, daughter of James Townsend Oswald MP of Dunnikeire, in Fife. He was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge and graduated B.A. and 24th Wrangler in 1850. He became a Fellow of his College and was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1854. In 1860 he was appointed Captain-Commandant of the 32nd Middlesex Rifle Volunteers. At the 1859 general election Bruce stood unsuccessfully for Parliament in Portsmouth. He stood again at the 1874 general election, and won the seat, holding it until his defeat at the 1885 general election. 1880 United Kingdom General Election
The 1880 United Kingdom general election was a general election in the United Kingdom held from 31 March to 27 April 1880. Its intense rhetoric was led by the Midlothian campaign of the Liberals, particularly the fierce oratory of Liberal leader William Gladstone. He vehemently attacked the foreign policy of the government of Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, as utterly immoral. Liberals secured one of their largest-ever majorities, leaving the Conservatives a distant second. As a result of the campaign, the Liberal Commons leader, Lord Hartington (heir apparent to the Duke of Devonshire) and that in the Lords, Lord Granville, stood back in favour of Gladstone, who thus became Prime Minister a second time. It was the last general election in which any party other than the Conservatives won a majority of the votes (rather than a plurality).
