James D. McClelland
James Dodds McClelland (August 7, 1848 in New York City – January 13, 1919 in Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of John McClelland and Margaret McClelland. He attended private schools, and graduated from Mt. Washington Collegiate Institute in 1863. He graduated from New York University School of Law in 1867, was admitted to the bar, and practiced in New York City. In 1869, he married Annie Melso. McClelland was a member of the New York State Assembly (New York Co., 9th D.) in 1882. He was an Assistant D.A. of New York County from 1898 to 1901 (under Asa Bird Gardiner and Eugene A. Philbin). He was a member of the New York State Senate (13th D.) from 1911 to 1914, sitting in the 134th, 135th, 136th and 137th New York State Legislatures. The 137th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 7 to May 20, 1914, while Martin H. Glynn was Governor of New York, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1894, re-apportioned in 1906 and 1907, 51 Senators and 150 assemblymen were elected in single-seat districts; senators for a two-year term, assemblymen for a one-year term. The senatorial districts were made up of entire counties, except New York County (twelve districts), Kings County (eight districts), Erie County (three districts) and Monroe County (two districts). Jimmy Walker
James John Walker (June 19, 1881November 18, 1946), known colloquially as Beau James, was mayor of New York City from 1926 to 1932. A flamboyant politician, he was a liberal Democrat and part of the powerful Tammany Hall machine. He was forced to resign during a corruption scandal. Early life and political career Walker was the son of Irish-born William H. Walker (1842–1916), a carpenter and lumberyard owner who was very active in local politics as a Democratic assemblyman and alderman from Greenwich Village, belying certain accounts of Walker's childhood that stated he grew up in poverty. Walker was not the best of students and dropped out of college before eventually graduating from New York Law School in 1904. Walker's father wanted him to become a lawyer and politician. Walker at first decided that he would rather write songs and be involved in the music industry. Edward Swann (March 10, 1862 – September 19, 1945) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician from New York. From November 4, 1902 to March 3, 1903, he served part of one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Life He was born on March 10, 1862, in Madison, Florida. Swann graduated from Columbia Law School in 1886, was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in New York City. He entered politics as a member of Tammany Hall. Congress Swann was elected as a Democrat to the 57th United States Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Amos J. Cummings and served from December 1, 1902, to March 3, 1903. Career after Congress Afterwards he resumed the practice of law in New York City.
