James Crawford (skier)
James "Jack" Crawford (born 3 May 1997) is a Canadian World Cup alpine ski racer. He specializes in super-G, and also competes in giant slalom, downhill, and combined. Crawford made his World Cup debut in January 2016 in a super-G at Kitzbühel, Austria. He competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics, and the World Championships in 2019 and 2021, where he was fourth in the combined event. At the 2023 World Championships in Courchevel, Crawford won his first gold medal in Super-G. In January 2022, Crawford was named to Canada's Olympic team; he was fourth in the downhill, sixth in the super-G, and won the bronze medal in the combined. Crawford's older sister Candace is also an alpine racer; their aunt is Judy Crawford, who finished fourth in the slalom at the 1972 Winter Olympics at Sapporo. Super-G
Super giant slalom, or super-G, is a racing discipline of alpine skiing. Along with the faster downhill, it is regarded as a "speed" event, in contrast to the technical events giant slalom and slalom. It debuted as an official World Cup event during the 1983 season and was added to the official schedule of the World Championships in 1987 and the Winter Olympics in 1988. Much like downhill, a super-G course consists of widely set gates that racers must pass through. The course is set so that skiers must turn more than in downhill, though the speeds are still much higher than in giant slalom (hence the name). Each athlete only has one run to clock the best time. In the Olympics, super-G courses are usually set on the same slopes as the downhill, but with a lower starting point. 2022–23 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup
The International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup is the premier circuit for alpine skiing competition. The inaugural season launched in January 1967, and the season marks the 57th consecutive year for the FIS World Cup. This season started in October 2022 in Sölden, Austria, and is intended to conclude in mid-March 2023 at the finals in Soldeu, Andorra. Marco Odermatt and Mikaela Shiffrin are the defending overall champions from the 2021–22 season. Shiffrin is attempting to break Lindsey Vonn's record for the most wins in the Women's World Cup (82 wins), as well as break the record in the entire history of the World Cup held by Ingemar Stenmark (86 wins). The men's combined competition of the Beijing 2022 Olympics was held on 10 February, on "Rock" and " Ice River" courses at the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Centre in Yanqing District. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships is an alpine skiing competition organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). History The inaugural world championships in alpine skiing were held in 1931. Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings.
