James Charles Dempsey
James Charles Dempsey (August 30, 1908 – July 9, 1979), was a decorated submarine commander during World War II who reached the rank of Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. He died, aged 70, on July 9, 1979, of congestive heart and kidney failure at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. As submarine commander of the USS-37, he sank the first enemy destroyer in World War II on February 8, 1942. For this action, he was awarded a Navy Cross. According to the official award citation, it was awarded "For extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the USS-37, in offensive action in the Straits of Makassar on February 8, 1942...Lieutenant Dempsey attacked four vessels...at close range, completely destroying one of them in the engagement." Jackson DeForest Kelley (January 20, 1920 – June 11, 1999), known to colleagues as "Dee", was an American actor, screenwriter, poet, and singer. He was known for his roles in Westerns and as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy of the in the television and film series '' Star Trek'' (1966–1991). Early life Kelley was born in Toccoa, Georgia, the son of Clora (née Casey) and Ernest David Kelley, a Baptist minister of Irish and southern ancestry. Portsmouth Naval Hospital
The Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP), formerly Naval Hospital Portsmouth, and originally Norfolk Naval Hospital, is a United States Navy medical center in Portsmouth, Virginia, United States. It is the oldest continuously running hospital in the Navy medical system. History The historic Portsmouth Naval Hospital building was designed by architect John Haviland (1792–1852) and built in 1827. It is a three-story granite and Freestone building on a basement. Its form is that of a hollow rectangle, measuring wide by deep. The front facade features a wide Doric order portico with ten columns. The building's interior was reconstructed in 1907, and a shallow dome was added to the roof.
